2014 Town & Country Touring.

Was at the dealer for an oil change and while doing their multi point inspection they said the battery cranking amps was only 450 not 730. In the past I have always changed batteries when they were dead. Is this battery soon to be dead?

If needed, I'm looking at either an Duralast Gold from Autozone (I have had excellent service from these in the past) $170.00 + tax. 5 year warranty, 3 years free replacement 2 years pro rated. Or a Everstart from Walmart, 150.00 + tax. Same warranty as the Duralast.

Dealers battery only had a 2 year warranty. Not to mention their inflated install price.

Thoughts on which would serve me better.

I would get a second opinion, but since you are in a hot climate, and that van is 4, maybe close to 5 years old the battery probably is failing. I would have it tested at another shop and see what they get for the CCA. If it's about the same, replace it. I have had no issues with the Walmart batteries, but I was actually able to find one for my van for a lot less money at Farm and Fleet, which is a small local chain(~$100).

Johnson Controls makes both those batteries, and many of the others you'll find, including ACDelco. Can branding really drive different prices for the same battery or is there something else to it? I think it's probably hard to go wrong if you just pick the lowest priced one.

That said, I probably wouldn't replace it till there were symptoms.

Walmart batteries are pretty good and well priced. I replaced the original battery on my 2010 last year with Walmart's Everstart Maxx for around $140 Canadian or roughly $100US.

As mentioned above, get it tested somewhere else. I believe Autozone in the US tests it for free. If it's harder to start the van, then it's a sign your battery is on it's way out

Just make sure the new battery provides sufficient CCAs.

Johnson Controls doesn't make those batteries, it just own the brands, quality still changes from brand to brand, even if owned by Johnson Controls.

Well, I googled "who makes such and such batteries" and Johnson Controls was the answer it gave me.

The battery for the 2011+ is more expensive than the one on older vans. You won't find it for$70. Most are$150+.

What’s special about the newer van battery.
Won’t hurt to check what rural king has for the 2011 and newer. Unless one likes to spend $200 on a battery. Me? Not so much.

Don't believe everything you see on internet.

Check battery label, if it says "Made by Johnson Controls", then it was made by Johnson Controls. If it says "Dist. by Johnson Controls", then it was not made by Johnson Controls.

Bigger battery and not so popular either. Buy Walmart, you can find Walmart everywhere in case you need a warranty replacement. Doubt you find a Rural King when traveling.

Don't believe me either, look at your battery and see it for yourself.

I've had very good luck with Advance auto batteries and you can almost always get 30% off their prices online.

Point of interest, an Advance auto series 94H7 battery is $169.99. A series 49H8 which is for other Chrysler cars and trucks is bigger but will fit with a minor trim is $158.99. Here's a thread that talks about what is needed to make it fit:http://forum.chryslerminivan.net/sh...9-Bigger-Better-Battery-Install?highlight=94R

It's probably less important to have a huge battery with lots of cca but if your battery is producing much lower power than it originally produced when new that is a sign that it is failing. I would rather replace mine when it's convenient if I know it is getting worn out.

I recommend an AGM battery made by Deka/East Penn.

If you have a Batteries + Bulbs store near by, the Duracell Ultra AGM is one of the best. I'm not sure who manufactures the Duracell Gold lead acid model though...

Second recommendation would be a DieHard Gold AGM if you still have a Sears that carries them...

OP here. I'm going to go to Walmart and have them test the CCA and see if it's the same as the dealers. If so I will get the battery from them, while I'm there.

Question about the AGM batteries do they last longer in a hot climate?

Doubt it will last longer, as AGM hold less electrolyte.

Can I use a different battery group size?

Just as with any part or accessory, using the wrong size battery can lead to a host of problems. While it isn't always necessary to use the OEM brand, you should always replace your battery with the size and output that the manufacturer recommends.
