CORRECTION 8/17/21: This story has been updated to correctly state the Santa Fe PHEV's electric range and usable battery capacity.

Santa fe plug in hybrid electric range

The Hyundai Santa Fe received a significant refresh for 2021, gaining a bold new grille up front and a trendy full-width taillight around back. There were also new powertrains, including a traditional hybrid setup, but for 2022 the Santa Fe gets even more eco-friendly with the addition of a plug-in-hybrid variant. We learned the details of the PHEV’s powertrain earlier this year and now Hyundai has released pricing information for the Santa Fe plug-in hybrid.

The plug-in powertrain comes on two trim levels. The base SEL starts at $40,535 and nets you Hyundai’s digital key, Smart Sense safety features, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and an 8.0-inch infotainment screen. Upgrading to the Limited will cost $46,545 and adds the Smart Park system, a 360-degree camera, ventilated leather seats, and a 10.3-inch infotainment screen. All Santa Fe PHEVs are powered by a 177-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and 90-hp electric motor feeding off a battery with 12.4 kWh of usable capacity. The system sends the combined 260 hp to all four wheels, and the PHEV gets an EPA-estimated 76 MPGe and 30 miles of pure electric driving range. When the battery is depleted, the Santa Fe PHEV returns 33 combined mpg according to the EPA.

Although the Santa Fe PHEV is the only plug-in in its size class, it competes against the smaller Toyota RAV4 Prime and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV for electrified-crossover sales. The 2022 RAV4 Prime SE is slightly cheaper at $39,565, while the more luxurious XSE goes for $42,890, and the Prime can extract an EPA-estimated 42 miles from its 18.1-kWh battery. A plug-in Outlander based on the new model is due soon, but for 2022 the Outlander PHEV carries over from the third generation. Pricing for the cheapest SEL starts at $37,890, undercutting both the Santa Fe and RAV4, while the LE starts at 39,590 and the GT goes for $43,590. The Outlander PHEV can go 24 miles thanks to a 13.8-kWh battery. The Santa Fe goes on sale this summer, but is only available in 11 states.

Design & Features

The 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-in hybrid for the U.S. is a “carry-over model” and thus doesn’t have design changes to speak of. It’s simply a new model year exercise with changes to its trims or variants. Hyundai Motor America has announced that it will discontinue the SEL Convenience trim as part of the MY2023 revisions. Currently, the company offers the Santa Fe Plug-in hybrid in SEL Convenience and Limited versions.

Importantly, Hyundai will equip the 2023 Santa Fe Plug-in hybrid with the capability to receive over-the-air (OTA) updates for maps.

Specifications

The 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-in hybrid has the same specifications as the current model. It uses the G4F III SmartStream 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline direct injection engine in combination with a permanent magnet synchronous motor.

The engine produces 178 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque and the electric motor generates 66.9 kilowatts (90 horsepower) and 224 lb.-ft. of torque. The result of the combination is a total of 261 horsepower. A 6-speed automatic transmission and the HTRAC AWD system are standard in the most powerful Santa Fe variant.

The 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-in hybrid has a 13.8 kWh (360V, 38.3 Ah) Lithium-ion battery pack to power its 66.9 kW (90 horsepower)/224 lb.-ft. electric motor. It is liquid-cooled and mounted under the floor in a waterproof structure. The SUV should deliver the same electric driving range (EPA) as in the 2022 model – 31 miles. The combined fuel economy rating (EPA) may also be the same – 76 MPGe (using both electricity and gasoline)/33 MPG (using only gasoline). Expect a 120V charger that allows Level 1 charging to be complimentary with the purchase.

Production

Hyundai is likely to have started producing the 2023 Santa Fe. Like the current model, the 2023 version of the SUV would be shipped from one of its five plants in Ulsan, South Korea, not the local plant in Montgomery, the factory responsible for the 2023 Santa Fe and 2023 Santa Fe Hybrid (SOP: October 2022).

Release Date & Availability

  1. California (CA)
  2. Colorado (CO)
  3. Connecticut (CT)
  4. Maine (ME)
  5. Massachusetts (MA)
  6. Maryland (MD)
  7. New Jersey (NJ)
  8. New York (NY)
  9. Oregon (OR)
  10. Rhode Island (RI)
  11. Vermont (VT)

There’s no word on the paint and interior theme options for the new model yet. Quartz White, Twilight Black, Shimmering Silver, Portofino Gray, and Lagoon Blue are the paint choices for the current SUV. Customers specifying their order in the Quartz White, Twilight Black, or Lagoon Blue color have the option to choose between black and beige interiors. The Shimmering Silver and Portofino Gray-colored units are available with only a black interior.

Price

If a new entry-level model is announced, expect the base 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-in hybrid to cost over USD 40,000. If not, the confirmed Limited trim with the bells and whistles is likely to cost a little over USD 46,000. We’ll update the section when detailed info is released by the company.

The Korean model costs more than its chief competitor, the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which starts at USD 36,995. With the 2023 model year update, however, the Japanese SUV is likely to cost significantly more since it will switch to a new generation.

Over 1,100 units sold in the U.S. in 2022

The sales of Hyundai’s hybrid models in the U.S. have grown by 136.3% through April 2022, with 23,302 units sold, as per Wards Intelligence data (via wardsauto.com). Particularly, plug-in hybrid vehicle sales of the South Korean automaker are up 372.1% from 779 in 2021 to 3,678 units. The Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid is the second-highest contributor, accounting for 1,100 units or 30% of PHEVs.

On October 3, 2022, Hyundai announced that it sold 86,129 units of the Santa Fe’s gasoline, hybrid, and plug in hybrid variants combined in the U.S. in the first three quarters of the year. The company noted that the Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid saw its highest retail sales in September 2022.

TopElectricSUV says

The Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid offers a decent fuel-sipping powertrain option in the mid-size SUV segment. While the vehicle isn’t cheap, it is well-equipped with nice features that justify the price premium over gasoline and hybrid models.
