Riverside university health system emergency medicine residency

Riverside University Health System (RUHS) Medical Center is a 439-bed hospital that offers excellence in healthcare as well as medical education for the region’s medical residents, nursing students, and allied health professionals. Fellows in Vituity’s AP Fellowship Program at RUHS Medical Center will train in the 38-bed ED that oversees 100,000 patient visits annually and serves as the first responder in the case of natural disasters for Riverside County. The hospital has a Level II adult and pediatric trauma center, primary stroke center, and fully operational paramedic base station. It anticipates the opening of its STEMI center in 2021. The ED offers the following highlights:

  • Nation-leading performance in quality programs and efficiency
  • Rapid Medical Examination (RME) process for rapid assessment (patients are seen within 15 minutes of arrival)
  • A robust internal waiting room (no patients return to the lobby)
  • A Rapid Treatment Area (RTA) for lower acuity patients
  • A helipad and on-site decontamination unit

Curriculum

The Vituity EMAP Fellowship at Riverside University Health System provides clinical and didactic instruction, with our primary focus on the patient. The program is committed to providing a safe environment for the patients, consumer-friendly service, and general health promotion for the community. The curriculum is modeled from the American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the Society of Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant (SEMPA) standards for clinical postgraduate PA programs.

The clinical practicum is focused on hands-on training. Over the course of the 12.5-month fellowship, the fellow will spend 10 months (40 weeks) in the core Emergency Department, gaining 2,100 clinical hours in acute EM care in addition to lecture time. Off-service rotations will include the following: correctional health (in county jails), internal medicine, ICU, PoCUS course, and specialty rotation tracks.

The didactic segment of the fellowship includes weekly didactic lectures provided by the EM physicians and advanced provider group to elevate the fellow’s clinical confidence and ability. We encourage feedback and interaction from all fellows. The fellow will gain the skills and knowledge needed to:

  • Rapidly evaluate the emergent and non-emergent patient

  • Develop and initiate a treatment plan

  • Organize and record pertinent data

  • Understand the role of the AP and the supervising physician in the emergency department

  • Display professional leadership and management skills through the daily exercise of ethical decision making in the Emergency Department

  • Realize the multiple aspects of Emergency Medicine including: emergency department organization, administration, academics, research, and continuous quality improvement

  • Understand medical-legal issues as they relate to hospital-based EM, pre-hospital EMS, and community health system coordination

  • Continue to promote lifelong learning in medical education

  • Ensure longevity in the field of Emergency Medicine through a healthy personal and professional lifestyle
