Is applecare worth it for macbook pro reddit

I’ve always looked at Applecare in direct proportion to a number of factors.

Definition: "You" includes yourself, but also you as in that (other) person in your sphere of close acquaintances, your significant other, or someone else who is around you a lot is more than one of the following.

So when I say "you" it can also be referring to "they", "them", or the proverbial "karen" whose computer is always breaking.

If you would consider yourself a clumsy or careless person, or isn’t taking care of their technology, buy Applecare

If you’re clumsy and fall down a lot buy Applecare

If you spill drinks on your laptop and can’t stop, buy Applecare

If you don’t know how to put your computer in a protective case buy Applecare

If you know nothing about computers and insist on letting your cat sit on your laptop buy Applecare.

Applecare is basically an amateur computer tax to make sure that you have a machine that runs

I own half a dozen Mac and with the exception of none of them I always buy used or refurbished machines. They have been working near flawlessly for 7 years, some of them have been running 24/7 (never turned off or rebooted) as a server frequently is always on for 2 years straight.

Lately from a San Diego company run by pedantic and impolite nerds that do great work and sell me quality stuff that is 3 to 4 years old with a warranty probably 30% less than new

The CC that I used to buy my new macbook pro 14, has kind of insurance and extended warranty for the purchases:

"most new items of personal property you purchase with your card will be replaced, repaired, or you will be reimbursed if they are lost, stolen or damaged within 90 days of purchase. Plus, with Extended Protection, you can actually double the period of a manufacturer’s original Canadian or U.S. warranty up to one year on most purchases. That makes your CIBC Visa Card ideal for new purchases like electronic equipment and appliances. Purchase Security and Extended Protection Insurance are “excess insurance,” meaning they cover you only to the extent your claim exceeds the coverage of other insurance or indemnity available to you"

Considering this, do you think it still worth it to buy applecare? I am short on fund!

Is applecare worth it for macbook pro reddit

I've ordered the 2021 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Max chip that totaled out to $3,039 with the student discount and I was wondering if AppleCare+ would be worth the $359 price tag.

I'm really careful with my devices and I don't have a single scratch on my 2016 MacBook Pro 15-inch. But there are some minor problems with the display. The new MacBook Pro looks a lot beefier and reliable but the peace of mind would be really nice. What do you think? Is it worth it?

As with any warranty you need to consider your own financial situation. Can you afford a costly repair of one were to come up? If so, than your few hundred dollars may be better served in the short term and take that gamble without the extra warranty.

How are you going to use it? On a desk plugged into a monitor all the time? Low chance for physical damage. Moving around many times a day used in lots of different settings? High chance for damage.

Consider your potential for damage, financial situation, and risk aversion for a failure beyond your control.

I used to buy AppleCare for all my computers. Then I had some issues with my previous mac book pro. Some things were minor, some were so wide spread internet sites were dedicated to them.

When it was younger it had taken a short fall off a table and had a small ding in the case. Very small ding.

Apple would not cover ANY of the issues because of the small ding, even ones that web sites were dedicated to unless I put a new case on my laptop to the order of 700$.

I have not bought it apple care since, and have bought about 6 mac books for myself, friends or family and none of them have it. Also if you read the forums, Apple Care used to be a lot more encompassing, there are more and more stories about crappy support from the geniuses.

I'm an Apple Fan Boi, who lost faith in AppleCare after being burned.

Yes this is always a tough question every time I get an Apple product, especially because over the many years the value of AppleCare varies (cost versus what you get).

Lately I’ve been going by the personal guideline of how painful would it be if something happened to that particular device. Price of a replacement device is a huge factor, but also how important is the device for work/school and how easy would it be to replace.

For the MacBook which would be costly for me to replace, that I can’t afford much downtime and I’d need a replacement immediately, and I was going to keep it for years, I chose to get AppleCare, even with the hefty cost.

For something like an iPad or Watch, still painful to replace but more palatable, that I don’t need right away and I could technically survive winout, I’m ok with not getting AppleCare.

The iPhone is always a tough one, because I have damaged some in the past, but not recently since they are built more water resistant and more crack resistant. Plus I tend to upgrade annually, and getting a temporary replacement has gotten easier due to the availability of lower-spec’d models.
