Should I buy the Oculus Quest 2, 128 GB or 256 GB?

In short:

• If you’re looking to save money: Look for a used or refurbished 64 GB Oculus/Meta Quest 2 headset. (Oculus and Meta are the same thing). You can find these up to $100 cheaper than the other 2 versions.
• If you’re looking for ‘best value’: Get the 128 GB Quest 2. It can hold many games and at worst, all you have to do is uninstall some games to add new ones. This will be the best option for 90% of people.
• If you’re planning on storing lots of movies, recording gameplay videos or buying LOTS of games: Get the 256 GB Quest.

My personal recommendation is the 128 GB Quest 2 if that’s still in stock.

How big are Oculus Quest Games?

How much space do you need for the Oculus Quest? Is 128 GB Enough?

Most games are 0.5 – 3 GB of space.

Here are some of the more popular game sizes (updated January 2022):

• The Walking Dead Saints and Sinners is the biggest game at 8.39 GB
• Phantom Covert Ops, Population One and Robo Recall are some of the bigger games at 3.5 GB
• Tilt Brush is 292.9 MB
• VRChat is 304 MB (not including downloadable assets)
• I Expect You to Die is 897.8 MB
• Creed: Rise to Glory is 995.4 MB
• Bigscreen is 1.09 GB
• Arizona Sunshine is 1.32 GB
• SUPERHOT VR is 1.9 GB
• Dance Central is 2.78 GB

Note: Recent games have come out, like Resident Evil 4 which requires 11.5 GB of space to install and Medal of Honor takes up 41 GB of space, being by far the biggest game.

Personally, I wouldn’t worry about ‘future-proofing’ too much since the VR space is rapidly improving and there’ll be new headsets soon. Instead, I’d rather save that extra money for a new gen headset (Quest 2 Pro or Quest 3) which may come out in 1-2 years.

But in general, the majority of games are 2 GB or under. Some of the bigger games reach 2-4 GB.

How much space (GB) is Beat Saber? The game itself is 0.6 GB, but you can add custom songs and mods which can easily double or triple the size if you’re heavily into it. Custom songs are usually ~3 megabytes each, so 100 custom songs = 300 MB.

How many games can the 128 GB Oculus Quest 2 hold?

According to our database, the average VR game size is 1.686 GB. This should allow you to install 80+ games at once!

This is more than enough for most people, especially since you can uninstall older games to free up space.

On top of that, by using Oculus Link, you can play store games on your PC. So if you want to play SteamVR games or other desktop titles, you just need space on your computer, not your headset.

Is There Any Reason To get the 256 GB Version?

There are 3 main reasons to go the 256 GB version over the 128 GB:

1. You want to store lots of movies. Movies are BIG.
2. You want to record a lot of gameplay videos (if you’re a Youtuber or something). If just casually recording, you can get away with the 64 GB version still.
3. You want to install many games at once for whatever reason. Some people travel a lot and just want to store all their games whilst they travel. Other people just buy and play a lot of games.

How Big are Movies?

At 1080p, most movies are 1-3 GB. 3D movies are 10-25 GB+

The Quest has very high resolution, so it’s one of the best headsets for watching movies.

Movies can quickly take up space on your headset. However, by using programs like Skybox VR, OR tethering to your computer, you can just store the movie files on your computer and watch from your headset (both wirelessly and wired). Skybox VR is amazing and doesn’t lag at all, even when using the headset wirelessly.

The Verdict: Is 128 GB Enough?

For gaming alone, 128 GB is enough for 95% of people. Quest 2 games cost between $10-$40 USD, so you’ll need to buy a lot of games to fill up all that space.

For people who travel frequently, store lots of movies/videos on their headset or record VR gameplay, then 256 GB is a more suitable choice.
