The battery in your car remote control key needs to be replaced when it has run out of power. If you are uncertain as to how you can change your Volvo key battery, continue reading the article to follow some simple steps that will let you achieve this.

Battery Life

All batteries have a limited service life and eventually, they need to be replaced. However, this does not apply to a Key Tag as its battery cannot be replaced. A new key tag needs to be ordered if it does not work anymore. The order can be made from an authorized Volvo workshop. Take note that a key tag that has been discharged must be deleted so as to ensure no unauthorized users can access the car via back-up start. The individual service life of your key battery varies. It depends on how often the vehicle or the key is used. You should replace the battery for your Volvo key if the following factors are met:

  • The symbol for information on your dashboard is displayed and from the illumination, you can read the note "Car key battery low. See Owner's manual" being displayed.
  • The locks of your Volvo car do not react to the car's remote control key over repeated occasions even when you are within 65 feet of the car. You can try moving closer to the car to make another lock/unlock attempt. If this fails, you should change your Volvo key battery.

Step 1

  • Start by first holding the Volvo key with the Volvo logo facing the right way and the front clearly seen.
  • Slide the button found at the bottom end near the key ring towards the right side.
  • Slide the side shell of the key front in an upward motion by a few millimeters.
  • The shell will become loose and can be lifted off from the key.

Step 2

  • Turn the key and move the button to the side. Slide the back shell in an upward motion by a few millimeters.
  • The shell will become loose and can be lifted off from the key.

Step 3

  • Use a screwdriver to turn the battery cover in an anticlockwise motion until you see the markings meeting the OPEN
  • Carefully remove the battery cover upwards by pressing a fingernail into the recess area.

Step 4

  • The (+) side of the battery will face upwards. Carefully remove the cover loose and avoid touching the new battery before placing it in.

Step 5

  • Install a new battery with its (+) side facing up. Do not let your fingers come into contact with the key battery to prevent damage.
  • Place the battery inside the holder with its edge facing down. Slid the battery in a forward motion so that it fastens itself underneath the plastic catch.
  • Press the battery down so as to fasten it underneath the upper black plastic catch.

Step 6

  • Refit the battery cover and turn it in a clockwise motion until the marking meets the CLOSE
  • Reposition the rear shell and press it down and then slide the shell back until you hear a click.
