How do you know if your pregnant on nexplanon

Don't worry you definitely aren't pregnant, it's standard with contraceptive that releases hormones.

The implant is more effective than sterilisation according to the consultant that put mine in. I had mine in for three years and having it removed was the best thing I could have done. No periods for about 6 months then constant bleeding for near enough the next 2 and a half years! I had to go to the doctors several times for tablets that would stop the bleeding, which would sort it for about 6 weeks and then it would start again.

Also because you are releasing a hormone into your body, which surges, you will likely feel very sick whilst your body adjusts to it, and most people I now that have had it suffered really low mood, agitated or angry, put on weight, long bleeds etc. and the longer you have it the more erratic it can be. Most of my friends gave up on it by nine months as they couldn't deal with the side effects anymore.

On the bright side once it's removed your body goes back to normal extremely quickly, when mine was removed it was like a black cloud had been lifted and realised how badly that little implant affects you. Never again.

Can i still get pregnant if i have the Implanon?

Implanon is the old brand name for the birth control implant. It’s now available under the brand name Nexplanon. The implant is one of the most effective birth control methods out there — it’s more than 99% effective. That means fewer than 1 out of 100 people who use the implant get pregnant each year.

The implant works by releasing the hormone progestin into your body. Progestin prevents pregnancy by keeping your ovaries from releasing eggs  (ovulation). Pregnancy can’t happen if there’s no egg to join with sperm. Progestin also thickens the mucus in your cervix, which blocks sperm.

For most people who use the implant, periods become fewer and lighter. Some people worry that they’re pregnant if they don’t have a regular period, but this is a common side effect of the implant and doesn’t mean you’re pregnant. If you use the implant, you can be confident that the chances of pregnancy are very very low.

Once a nurse or doctor inserts the birth control implant into your arm, it’s almost mistake-proof, making the birth control implant one of the safest, most effective, and convenient methods available.

How effective is the implant?

The implant is one of the best birth control methods out there — it’s more than 99% effective. That means fewer than 1 out of 100 people who use Nexplanon will get pregnant each year. It doesn’t get much better than that.

The implant is so effective because there's no chance of making a mistake. Since it’s in your arm, you can’t forget to take it, or use it incorrectly. It protects you from pregnancy all day, every day for up to 5 years. If you decide you want to get pregnant, a nurse or doctor can take it out and you can get pregnant right away.

The implant doesn’t protect you from STDs, so use condoms along with the implant to help protect you from both pregnancy and STDs. That’s how you make sex worry-free.

How long does it take for the birth control implant to work?

If you get Nexplanon during the first 5 days of your period, you’re protected from pregnancy right away.

If you get the implant at any other time in your cycle, use some other form of birth control (like condoms) during the first week. After that first week, the implant starts working and you’re protected from pregnancy for up to 5 years. That’s why it’s called get-it-and-forget-it birth control.

More questions from patients:

Do antibiotics affect Nexplanon?

Common antibiotics, like amoxicillin, won’t change the effectiveness of nexplanon. The antibiotic rifampin (also known as Rifadin and Rimactane) is the only exception — it can lower the effectiveness of nexplanon and other birth control methods. Rifampin is an antibiotic used to treat tuberculosis.

Some other medicines can make nexplanon less effective. It’s important to let your nurse or doctor know about any drugs and medicines you take — prescription, over-the-counter, recreational, vitamins, and herbal supplements — before they prescribe anything new for you.
