There are many reasons to transfer money with a credit card. For example, you may have received a refund from a store and need to move the funds back to your main bank account.

Alternatively, an unexpected bill might appear, threatening to push you into your overdraft. Completing a money transfer by credit card could prevent it happening.

Depending on your provider and the terms and conditions of your card, you might also have the option to transfer money to loved ones’ bank accounts too. This could provide them with essential support during a financial emergency.

How do I transfer money from a credit card to an account?

The ability to send money by credit card to a bank account depends on your chosen lender or service provider. Money transfer tools differ between companies and can include:

  • Online services and apps. Your provider may offer the option to send money online with a credit card – or via a mobile app. Any money transfers you set up will need to be within your existing credit card limit.
  • In-person services. If you prefer the personal touch, you could make a money transfer request and get more information at your local bank branch.
  • Telephone services. Speak to an adviser by phone to see what’s possible with your card and provider.
  • Money transfer companies. Third-party money transfer services often allow you to pay for a domestic or international bank transfer by credit card.
  • Cash withdrawals. A simple yet effective technique can be to withdraw money from a cash machine using your credit card and then deposit it into an account at a nearby bank branch.

What to consider when transferring money from a credit card to an account

It’s important you don’t rush to transfer money from a credit card to an account. Interest and other charges might apply, while there may be limits on who you can send money to – and how much.

Always bear the following points in mind and double-check all the details with your bank or credit card company so you know what to expect.

Maximum money transfer amounts

As with other types of credit card spending, there’s a cap on how much money you can move to a bank account. You won’t be able to exceed your overall credit card limit. Your lender might also put additional caps in place too – for example, restricting you to a certain percentage of your credit limit.

Interest

Many types of money transfers include fees. Interest is the main one to look out for each time you transfer money with a credit card. It’s a charge, expressed as a percentage, that applies if you don’t pay off your card balance each month. Interest rates on cash withdrawals can be particularly high, so budget carefully when considering that option.

Additional money transfer charges

Check for extra transfer fees whenever you move money from your credit card to a bank account. The exact fee will depend on your lender’s policies and the sum you send. They’re often expressed as a percentage of the total money transfer amount.

Transferring to another person’s account

Not all lenders offer the ability to transfer money from a credit card to an account held by another person. As a result, you may wish to contact your bank or credit card company to learn what’s possible – and potentially shop around for a more convenient option.

Alternatively, you could make a bank account deposit through a third-party money transfer service and pay with your credit card.

The timespan of a money transfer from a credit card

Estimated money transfer times vary between providers, whether you’re going through a bank, credit card company or money transfer service. Don’t expect your funds to land in your chosen bank account immediately. It could take a couple of business days before your money transfer by credit card completes.

International money transfers

Some traditional banks may lack the facilities to send money from a credit card to a foreign account. That’s where third-party money transfer services can come in handy. Simply provide any details requested about your receiver, the destination country and their bank account, then choose credit card as your payment option.

Safety precautions when transferring from a credit card to an account

The option to transfer money from a credit card to an account isn’t for everyone. When weighing up the various pros and cons, always check you:

  • Are fully aware of the potential interest charges and transfer fees that are payable.
  • Can keep track of any money moved from your credit card, to ensure your borrowing remains stable and sustainable.
  • Understand what interest rates mean and how they can potentially increase your level of debt over time.
  • Review your maximum money transfer limit with your lender and understand exactly how much you can move to a bank account.

Benefits of transferring from a credit card to an account

Depending on your circumstances, using your credit card can be convenient. Some of the other potential benefits of transferring money with a credit card include:

  • Getting out of an overdraft. Topping up your bank account balance could help put your finances back on track.
  • Supporting friends and relatives overseas. Assist loved ones in a different country, even when you don’t have funds immediately to hand.
  • Tackling unexpected costs. From a replacement boiler to urgent car repairs, making a money transfer by credit card can offer peace of mind during an emergency.
  • Overcoming payment challenges. Tradespeople and small businesses don’t always accept credit cards directly. Transferring funds to a bank account gives you an alternative payment option.
