4 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 08/30/2022

The car was having problems shifting and the check engine light came on. Took car to independent mechanic and they discovered the transmission control module needs to be replaced, but not able to get one. Told there is a 50,000 on a waiting list to get one. Went to trade car in at Ford dealership towards a new Ford and they will give $100 for our 2014 Focus with the tcm problem.

5 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2022

My 2014 Ford Focus titanium experiences bucks and jerking on a daily basis. I will be making turns crossing large streets and I will have a chance to go and when I do the car will stall and the power will come back almost getting me killed by oncoming traffic. Also at red lights or stop signs I will stop and then press the gas only to have the car go a little and then stall or jerk/buck in which the person behind me (especially at red lights) thinks I'm going and goes only to have me stop and then they almost hit my back (I actually had one person tap my back bumper but thank jesus I was ok). Also on the highway doing 55-70 mph and I press the gas to move a lane or go forward more the car will drop gears and stall causing the cars behind me to almost hit me and honk. This is not too mention the slips and bucks the transmission causes on the daily which are just annoying. This is extremely dangerous! I have given my wife my Nissan rogue and taken the Ford Focus as I don't feel safe letting her (or myself) drive it. And the transmission has been replaced as well as the clutch before and most recent the car wouldn't go in reverse and they fixed the tcm. It is now known that Ford knew about these issues and did nothing! I'm afraid one day I will die in an accident and it will be because of this transmission but we don't have the money to get rid of the car we already paid off. And no one wants to buy this junker as we've tried to sell it! I don't know what to do as this is unbelievable?!.

6 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2022

01/08/2019- vehicle was checked for fuel tank deformation (18s32) vehicle mileage 65,162 the technician comments read as follows (check dtcs, check for available pcm software update, no available software update, no parts replaced) 07/26/2022- vehicle was brought to billy howell Ford Lincoln dealership for a permanant emmissions code po442. Checked oasis, no relevant information found. Performed evap system test, passed. Performed evap purge and seal test, passed. Connected smoke machine to test for leaks. Evap smoke machine measured a leak of approxamitely . 040", near acceptable range. Visual inspection during evap leak test, found smoke emitting from vapor canister fresh air vent tube, indicating evap vapor canister vent leakage. Recommend replacing evap vapor canister and retesting. 07/30/2022- I took vehicle to have the evap vapor canister replaced mechanic noticed that the fuel tank was slightly deformed. I drove the vehicle approxamitely 120 miles so the pcm would cycle and clear the permanent code . Fuel guage was on empty w/light on. I stopped at gas station I put 26 dollars of e-85 in vehicle. When I returned to car the fuel gauge was reading full dte 418 miles. The gauge was reading innacurate. I drove the car about 40 miles before it stalled and it would not start. I waited a few minutes and tried to start the vehicle and it started . Iimmediately drove home and parked it in the garage. All of these symptoms point to the recall (18s32) billy howell Ford say's my recall was already completed and I cant recall it again. The vehicle has never received a pcm reprogramming for the fuel tank (19s22) Ford was supposed to reprogram the pcm software back in 01/08/2019 when they checked for the tank deformation . Withouty the software update and necessary repairs. Its a risk.

7 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2022

I purchased my 2014 Ford Focus in 2018. I drove it very little between 2020-2021 due to covid and being furloughed. Once back to regular driving the car was shuttering and in July 2022 the clutch and tcm failed. At first the dealer denied it had anything to do with the transmission or settlement from Ford. I had to file an intent to arbitrate just to get it fixed under the warranty. The tcm was on on indefinite back order and I was told it could be up to a year. I filed for arbitration trying to get a repurchase using the magnuson moss the federal emission and design defect, and the consumer fraud act. I was denied because of the class action lawsuit. Ford refuses to honor their own warranty and the federal warranty because of this lawsuit. The suit was filed prior to my purchasing the vehicle as was the opt out. I am not involved w that lawsuit and should not be held to its terms. It’s terms benefit Ford. The tcm warranty was extended to 10 years by Ford in 2015 2 years before the lawsuit. I filed a complaint w the epa and miraculously Ford found a tcm and repaired it in one day. My car sat for months. It still shutters and has lost power in the 3 weeks that I have had it back. Mooresville Ford where the car was repaired refuses to give me an invoice or any information on any additional warranty on the replacement parts. This car is a danger and threat! the fact that u allowed Ford to get away w this is disgusting. Ford claims that ur car has to fail 3 times before a repurchase. So your telling me that while driving, usually on the highway, at over 65 mph my car has to lose power and I have to navigate it to the right with my steering and brakes that should hopefully work before I can get a repurchase?! under magnuson moss and the epa warranty I’m eligible for a repurchase. The car is not safe and I could not resell it to anyone in good conscience knowing that it will fail again. The replacement parts are the same defective parts that u allow them to use.

8 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 07/13/2022

After the engine light had been on for about a day and before I remembered to get it looked at, an alarm indicating "transmission fault" suddenly came on when I was in the middle of an intersection and the car completely stopped moving and wouldn't accelerate. Other cars went around me, but I was stuck there until I was able to restart the engine and try again and pull over. If another driver had not been paying attention, it could have caused an accident. This occurred at a four way stop, but on a busier street it might have been worse. We were able to get it driving again after restarting, and the independent mechanic diagnosed it with multiple error codes from the transmission control module. They reset the error codes to get it out of second gear and advised us that the tcm would need to be replaced soon. When reaching out to multiple Ford dealers and customer support representatives, we were told that though the tcm issues were under extended warrenty the replacement tcm part are backordered and we were offered no guidance on when parts would arrive and were told others had been waiting for months, so we have no recourse to fix the faulty system and were offered no compensation or assistance in the meantime. It has so far been about 6 weeks since the incident and have no updates. As a family with one car, this leaves us unable to trust that our only vehicle and we have needed to rent cars at great expense for longer trips.

9 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2022

Bought this car in may 2022. After about 2 weeks the car was slipping gears and would not reverse in some cases. Had it diagnosed by the Ford dealership and was told it needed a new tcm. After a few months we managed to get the part ourselves and replace it. Now the car is shifting roughly and says complete transmission failure but will still drive. I cannot believe Ford didn't recall the part, but rather issued an extended warranty on a part that is otherwise impossible to get ahold of.

10 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2022

I purchased this vehicle in March, 2022 knowing it had been bought back by Ford from the original owner under the lemon law because of repeated issues of balky transmission performance or no drive and time out of service. I purchased this car from the second owner in georgia. According to the Ford service documents obtained with the vehicle, several major repairs were performed. The vehicle performed well the time of purchase. I had confidence that Ford motor company had corrected the original defects. Now, 4 months after purchase, the transmission control module failed, resulting in a no drive/no start condition, two tow truck calls to remove the vehicle from precarious traffic situations adjacent to busy major highways. The Ford service writer indicates that while my vehicle is covered under Ford 's extended powertrain warranty as a result of the class action lawsuit concerning the dps6 transmission, the current tcm replacement parts backlog is 45,000, with vehicles out of service sitting at my dealer since February, 2022. There is no question that Ford dodged the bullet by skillfully avoid a full recall to replace these failed dps6 transmissions. What good is an extended warranty if no replacement parts are available??.

11 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2022

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Focus. The contact stated while driving approximately 45 mph the vehicle felt like it had shifted to a lower gear and then to neutral. The contact stated that she depressed the accelerator and the engine would rev but there would be no gain in speed. The contact stated that the vehicle would slip back into gear on its own. Additionally, the contact stated that when placing the vehicle into reverse the vehicle would stall, she would place the vehicle into park and restart, and the vehicle would drive normally. The contact stated that the check engine light was illuminated. The contact stated the failure became recurring and eventually the vehicle would not start. The contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer who diagnosed that the transmission control module needed to be replaced. The dealer informed the contact that the part was on backorder and the vehicle was not replaced. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

12 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 05/30/2022

The transmission shakes violently at take off and while driving it accelerates and acts as if the transmission is slipping. It has gotten worse since I bought it. The shimmy at start up was brought to the attention of the dealership at the time of purchase but I was told there was nothing wrong it was just a common thing with this transmission. The message center says transmission fault and the dealer says it is a covered problem tcm but the part is not available due to being back ordered. It has been parked fir 5 weeks and have been told to expect a year before the part is available.

13 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 05/27/2022

My car is coverd under the extended warranty for tcms and clutch parts resulting in the decision in the powershift class action lawsuit. My tcm has now failed, and Ford can not fix the car for up to 6 months, and will make no form of compensation. I don't understand how a car with a known defect like the Focus can still be allowed to plague owners like this while Ford escapes all responsibility.

14 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2022

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Focus. The contact stated while driving 40 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed and the vehicle began to shudder. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 114,000.

17 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2022

The "automatic" transmission jerks you forward as it switches gears. Makes the car slow down rapidly and jerks itself into gear which could cause a driver behind to rear end you. If this were to happen on the freeway, a major accident could occur. Problems diagnosed by transmission shop is actuator motors needing replacement along with the tcm. No one with any official capacity has inspected the car but this can be accomplished. An engine light came on after the transmission failed. Just purchased this car on April 5, 2022. Within one week of purchase this problem began. This car is available for inspection upon request.

18 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2022

On 3/18/22 while driving on I-95 in stop and go traffic the the car shuddered, shook, lurched, lunged from a compete stop and the rpm needle was going crazy. Then an emergency message came on my dashboard telling me the transmission was overheating and to pull over immediately in a safe area. I had the car towed from a shopping area parking lot to apple Ford in columbia maryland. They had it for two weeks, told me they road tested it and found nothing wrong. Meanwhile I researched and found reports all over the internet about these faulty powertrain transmissions and tcm's Ford knew about from 2014 on in those cars that they rolled out anyway. When told them what I found, out after two weeks they said they couldn't replicate the problem and come get the car off their lot. I said they had to drive the car in high traffic and they'd see, but but they were done. They were rude and dismissive. I previously reported this to you in complaint #1147296. I picked up the car and because I'm retired don't drive much it wasn't until stuck in another rolling backup on I-95 on 5-26-22 it did it again. I managed to make it home and the next day took it to aamco in laurel, MD. They confirmed an internal failure in the dual clutch, actuators and tcm module. The exact problem that's going on with all these Ford Focuses nationwide. Total cost of repairs $3,626. 61 and a 4-8 week wait for parts.

19 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Focus. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with transmission control module (tcm) and clutch failure. The dealer informed the contact that the tcm and clutch needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and transferred the contact's call to NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 187,000. The VIN was unavailable.

20 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 01/22/2022

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Focus. The contact stated that the vehicle went in for a routine oil change and was informed of a transmission flush and spark plug replacement was needed. The contact stated a week later the vehicle was taken back to the dealer for the transmission flush and spark plug replacement. The contact stated that while at the dealer the vehicle failed to shift to second gear, fifth gear, and reverse. The contact stated that the dealer informed her that the vehicle needed to be diagnosed. The contact stated she inquired about a clutch recall which the vehicle was previously repaired for in 2015. The dealer stated that they would need to contact the manufacturer for approval of repairs under a recall for the clutch and tcm. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and contacted the dealer to submit the correct paperwork. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 93,503.

21 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2022

My vehicle has been sitting at a Ford dealer needing a tcm for months neither Ford motor company nor the autonation Ford dealer has made any real attempts on getting it repaired. The car has already stopped on the interstate and slowed down without warning numerous times will not go into reverse and limps along at like 20 miles per hour Ford knows about this problem and keeps blaming the dealer and saying they let the part ticket expire the dealer will not return either of my phone calls. This is car has been in and out of the shop for this same problem for years and started having problems @ less then 1000 miles and Ford put this car back up for sale and thus putting my families life in danger.

22 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 10/28/2021

I went to oxford me to buy a part on the way back to augusta, me the shift module shifted itself from (d)drive to (n) and the car was rolling backwards as I was on a hill I pump the gas peddle until it shifted back into (d)drive this happened 3 times, I think it's the tcm also, the transmission began slipping after this problem and then the computer shut off the motor and I had to pull over to the side of the road and call a flatbed driver to pick me up at my house that's where I could use the phone 10 miles away! the tow was $127. 00 the tmc shift module is $298. 00 plus 5. 5% tax. This car is very dangerous to drive in traffic or anywhere!!! I took it to quark Ford dealership in hallowell, maine and there they said they can do a safety check on the doors & trunk the transmission check would cost me $126. 00 an hour to do! so, I left!.

23 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2021

On 08/18/2021, the transmission control module (tcm) on our 2014 Ford Focus failed completely in a parking lot with no advance warning. This failure of the transmission could have happened while driving in a dangerous location such as an entrance ramp, a busy highway or other location where it would have been impossible to move out of the traffic lane. This lack of engagement or loss of power could have possibly endangered our lives or the lives of others. The car was towed to a nearby Ford dealer who diagnosed the problem as a failed tcm. Ford sent us a letter in August 2016 titled as “customer satisfaction program 14m02” for our specific 2014 Focus, with our specific VIN # that Ford was extending the warranty of the tcm, to a total of 10 years or 150,000 miles from the warranty start date, whichever occurs first. The Ford dealer ordered the tcm, but it is still on backorder with no estimated arrival time. The car has been unusable & sitting at the dealer’s lot waiting for the replacement tcm for 4-1/2+ months! according to the detroit free press article of 07/11/2019 (“Ford knew Focus, fiesta had flawed transmission, sold them anyway”), Ford was aware of the problem. The serious transmission reliability issues with my 2014 Ford Focus go beyond just the tcm. The original tcm was reprogrammed after 30,000 miles. In the 126,728 miles the car has been driven, I have had the clutch replaced five times due to shudder during shifting. In my opinion, it is a breach of consumer protection laws when Ford does not honor their warranty in a timely manner. That indicates to me that Ford hasn’t taken ownership of these transmission problems and has delayed/neglected its duty to repair & make the car safe & reliable. Nhtsa should launch an investigation and force Ford to fix this transmission design failure before we and/or others become seriously injured or die because of the inadequate performance of this car’s transmission.

24 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2021

While driving down the road the housing for the pcm broke and the whole thing fell hitting the driver front tire and dragging on the while able to stop. The car then shut off and and had engine and transmission error codes. Took the car to shop to be fixed. A few weeks later the car starts shifting hard and sometimes not shifting past 3rd gear through out the day by thw end of the day reverse quits working. The next drove car 15 miles to town shut it off and has not started since. Waiting on dealership to have available time slot to repair.

25 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2021

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Focus. The contact stated that while driving from a complete stop and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle would shudder. There was no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the transmission clutch was replaced under an unknown recall. However, the contact stated while driving at 45 mph six months later, the vehicle downshifted to first gear independently. The contact was unable to veer to the side of the road. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle. The contact shifted from park (p) to drive (d). However, the transmission remained stuck in first gear and the vehicle would not exceed 10 mph while driving. The contact was able to drive back to his residence. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission control module (tcm) had failed and needed to be replaced. However, the parts were on back order. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the parts were on back order. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.

26 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2020

While driving on a level four lane road (at 45mph), the car shook and transmission started slipping badly. Luckily I was close to home. Changed the transmission fluid and only got 4 miles down the road afterwards and it shook violently and the transmission completely went out. Had the car towed to the dealership and told us the tcm (transmission control module) was bad and replaced it since it was covered under Fords 150. 000 mile extended warranty but after replacing that they done more tests on the car when they said the whole tranny also had to be rebuilt. Ford extended the warranty to 100,000 miles on the parts in my tranny but mine had 13,000 miles too many to qualify for be covered. So now I'm stuck paying $2500 plus taxes!!! I paid $6,000 for the car and 1 week later, I have to pay almost another $3000. I've always been a Ford lover but not after this. I'm done!.

27 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 05/28/2020

Nhtsa recall 18v-735 and code p0606 indicates a fault in the ecm/pcm /p06b8 internal control module transaction.

28 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2020

1. Clutch slips in transmission causing vehicle to stall or reach dangerous rpm's before switching into another gear. 2. Repair was denied by Ford stating that it wasn't related to the current recall but was the clutches that needed to be replaced. Clutches are going out due to the tcm that was recalled on the vehicle. 3. Horn has decided to stop working along with controls on the steering wheel due to a wiring issue with the vehicle. Fuses have been changed ensuring that it is a wiring issue. 4. Hazard lights as well as half the buttons on the dash including radio, etc. Have also decided to stop working due to a wiring issue in the vehicle. No hazards making it a risk and unsafe to pull vehicle off of road in case of an emergency. 5. Ford dealership that car was taken to stated all recalls were completed but when VIN is entered through Fords website it states that all recalls are incomplete. Ford sent me a notice for repairs on transmission stating it will be almost $1400 to replace clutches in transmission. There would be no problems with the clutches if there was never anything wrong with the transmission control module to begin with. Repairing the transmission should not be on the owner of these vehicles and Ford should be liable for the repairs to an issue that was their responsibility to correct from the beginning and was not corrected in a timely manner.

29 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2019

Had to have 4 or 5 different transmission services done under warranty to resolve harsh shifting, erratic shifting, bucking etc. Inluding total clutch rebuilds, software flashes, and total tcm replacement and the issue is still not resolved.

30 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2019

I was driving my car home on the freeway November 19, 2019. Going about 65 mph and it started shifting weird. I made it home hooked it up to the computer got the codes and it was all related to the transmission control module. The transmission control module was recalled on my car last year and the dealer fixed it. I took it back to the dealer they had it for about a week, called and told me they replace the transmission control module again however there was more damage. Its transmission problems it needs a new clutch assembly, slave cylinder and 2 clutch release levers. They told me this was my fault and it would cost me about $2000. I take very good care of my car I didn't have any problems prior to this. I can't afford the $2000 right now and I'm still making payments on my car every month. Dealership has all the info on their file.

31 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2019

Typical Ford Focus transmission clutch failure. Shuddering, jerking, etc. , in initial acceleration. Purchased vehicle used on 9/2/17. Took it in to dealer for transmission issue on 9/12/17. Dealer replaced clutch, according to the invoice, under warranty. Vehicle started having same issue, though very slight compared to first time, around 10/19. Went to dealer mid-November 2019. Was given appointment for 12/3/19 for dealer to check transmission. Picked up vehicle on 12/4/19. Invoice states they replaced "seal asy. -oil 8138", "fluid-transm 5017", "clutch asy. 048090", "brake cleaner 21401". They also performed the recall repair - "18s32 fuel tank deformation recall", and, "18s32-a check for available pcm software update, no available software update, no parts replaced. " the transmission is an ongoing issue with these vehicles. Wanted to send this to NHTSA so there is a record of another one. Will update in future should tranny fail again. Still awaiting a formal recall on these things as it has been a known issue since the tranny was designed!.

32 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 09/24/2019

The car started excessively jerking while driving at 45 mph. The car selected the wrong gear and could have killed someone. This car is dangerous to drive. The car had new clutches that are 7 months old. The car drove home but would not crank or start at all the next day. There was a red engine light on the dash. The tcm and the clutch pack has been replaced but the car is not fixed. It still rive the same way.

33 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2019

Car shutters when pulling out slips when accelerating hard shifts transmission control module replaced under recall. Ford issued a customer satisfaction bulletin a couple of weeks ago bulletin # 19n08 but refuse to replace clutch because of title branded vehicle this car is dangerous to drive because it loses power when clutch shutters and when passing vehicle clutch slips horribly. This problem is a safety issue and when I contacted Ford customer service they refused to perform recall on vehicle.

34 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2019

I began having problems with the check engine light coming on. Before I could get it diagnosed I was on the road going about 35 miles per hour when I completely lost power. It felt as if the transmission had just switch to neutral and I was giving gas but going nowhere. I was able to pull off to the side of the road put the car in park and turn it off. When I turned it back on I was able to put the car in drive and carry on. A few days later I was on the highway going almost 70 miles per hour when I suddenly completely lost power again. I was able to pull off the side of the highway but it was fairly terrifying to be in the middle of traffic and all of a sudden not have power. It could have been disastrous. I finally got the car restarted and turned around and went back home. During this time I received a letter about a warranty extension all the transmission control module. I made an appointment with my local Ford dealer and they changed the module. I drove it to work after a few days and had the same issue again. I was told it must be a ba d module so they put in a new 1. Now have issues with the check engine light coming on that can't be resolved. That is how the transmission issues started originally. I don't trust to take this car on a trip. It only has about 68000 miles on it but I have lost faith in it. What if my daughter or my wife were driving it and this happened. I can't imagine.

35 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem
