To provide you with the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding IUDs, we have answered some commonly asked questions about IUDs below.

What is an Intrauterine Device (IUD)?

An Intrauterine Device (IUD) is a small T-shaped contraceptive device made from plastic and copper that is placed inside the uterus by an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB/GYN) or trained medical. IUDs are reversible and provide long-term contraceptive benefits.
There are two main types of IUDs, categorized as copper IUDs or hormonal IUDs. Both types work by preventing or making it difficult for sperm to reach the egg. However, each type of IUD has other contraceptive features.

Copper IUDs, such as ParaGard, are wrapped in copper, which triggers an inflammatory response in your uterine lining that is toxic to sperm and hostile to implantation if fertilization occurs.  In contrast, hormonal IUDs, such as Mirena, release progestin hormones that thicken cervical mucus and prevent ovulation. Consequently, hormonal IUDs trap sperm cells in the cervix and prevent the egg from leaving the ovaries to present itself for fertilization from the sperm.

IUDs are the most effective contraceptive device available, as they are more than 99.9% effective! Copper IUDs are effective for up to 12 years, while hormonal IUDs are effective for up to seven years.

How is an IUD inserted and removed?

IUDs are inserted and removed by healthcare professionals, such as an OB/GYN, registered nurse, physician’s assistant or nurse practitioner. The IUD is inserted through the cervix and into the uterus. In total, the IUD insertion procedure should take no more than 15 minutes and can be performed with or without local anesthesia.

To remove an IUD, the nurse or doctor simply pulls on the IUD string, causing the IUDs arms to fold up and the IUD to slip out. In the rare event that the IUD does not come out, your nurse or doctor may need to use special instruments to remove the IUD from your uterus. Both an IUD insertion and removal are known to cause mild cramping and discomfort.

What happens during an IUD insertion?

When you arrive for your IUD insertion appointment, you will be given a medical gown to change into. Once you have changed into the medical gown, you will be asked to lie down on a medical examination table with raised leg supports to allow your doctor or nurse access to your cervix and uterus.

When you are ready, your doctor will slowly insert an instrument known as a speculum into your vagina to widen it gently. They will then clean the cervix and vagina with an antiseptic solution, examine your uterus for irregularities, and align your cervix with your uterus.
To insert the IUD, your doctor or nurse will fold the IUD arms down and insert it into an applicator tube that is inserted through the cervix and into the uterus. The IUD arms will release when in place, and your doctor or nurse will remove the applicator tube.  Since IUDs have a string that hangs inside your cervix and vagina, your doctor or nurse will trim the string so that only one or two inches hang inside your vagina.

Where should I get my IUD inserted?

Where do I go to get an IUD? An IUD has to be put in by a doctor, nurse, or other health care provider. You can contact your gynecologist, family planning clinics, or a local Planned Parenthood health center to find out more about getting an IUD.

Can you get an IUD inserted same day?

Can any doctor place an IUD?

Your primary care or women's doctor can insert an IUD. They can insert ParaGard at any time during your menstrual cycle. Hormonal IUDs should be inserted in the first 7 days of your cycle. The procedure is quick and done in the doctor's office.

Do gynecologists do IUD insertion?
