What does an organic vapor cartridge protect against

The 3M™ Organic Vapor Cartridge 6001 helps provide organic vapor protection in a variety of environments. The cartridge may be used for vapor concentrations up to 10 times the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) with half facepieces or 50 times PEL with quantitatively fit tested full facepieces. Recommended applications for the cartridge include assembly and mechanical, batch-charging, change-overs, chemical dispensing, clean-up, cleaning, painting, parts cleaning, and seal coating. Inventory needs and training requirements for safety equipment are reduced because this respirator cartridge selection works for many different applications. Industries in which this cartridge is commonly used include chemicals, construction, oil and gas, and transportation.

Works with a variety of 3M facepieces
This organic vapor cartridge works with 3M™ Half and Full Facepieces 6000, 7000 and FF-400 Series with bayonet holders. The cartridge is NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) approved for environments containing certain organic vapors. The cartridge has been assigned the color code “black” in the NIOSH system.

Importance of respiratory protection
Breathing organic vapors can pose a risk to your health. NIOSH, a Federal government regulatory agency, has tested and approved the 3M™ Organic Vapor Cartridge 6001 to help reduce exposure to certain organic vapors.

About 3M Company
For more than a century, 3M has applied innovation and technology to improving our customers’ lives and supporting their business goals. Today the company, from its headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota, serves industrial and commercial customers and consumers in nearly 200 countries. Personal Safety products, focused on worker safety, include respirators, hearing-protection, eyewear, hard hats, air and noise monitoring devices, welding lenses, garments, fall protection, reflective materials, and comprehensive training programs. The 3M brand, across thousands of products, represents consistency, superior quality, and value.

Professional contractors looking for respiratory protection against certain organic vapors and particulates will appreciate these high-quality organic vapor cartridge/P100 cartridge/filters from 3M. They are approved by NIOSH and can be used for a variety of applications, including petrochemical and chemical processing, utilities, pharmaceuticals, mining and primary metals. The swept-back design offers enhanced comfort, visibility, and balance.

When properly fitted, these filters also provide respiratory protection from certain organic vapors as well as non-oil and oil particulates at concentrations up to 10 times the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) with half facepieces or 50 times PEL with full facepieces

Use with 3M™ Reusable Respirators, including half and full facepieces 6000, 7000, and FF-400 Series with bayonet filter holders. Full facepieces must be quantitatively fit tested to claim assigned protection factor above 10 in negative pressure mode. Not for use in environments that are immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH).

Biological Particles:
These cartridge/filters can help reduce inhalation exposures to certain airborne biological particles (e.g., mold, Bacillus anthracis, Avian Influenza Viruses, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, etc.) but cannot eliminate the risk of contracting infection, illness, or disease. OSHA and other government agencies have not established safe exposure limits for these contaminants.

Usage

Before using these filters, you must determine the following:

  • The type of contaminant(s) for which the respirator is being selected.
  • The concentration level of contaminant(s).
  • Whether the respirator can be properly fitted on the wearer’s face. (e.g., Do not use with beards, facial hair, or other conditions that prevent a good seal between the face and the face seal of the respirator.)
  • Before use of these respirators, a written respiratory protection program must be implemented, meeting all the requirements of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134, including training, medical evaluation, and fit testing.

Use Limitations:

  • These cartridges do not supply oxygen. Do not use in atmospheres containing less than 19.5% oxygen.
  • Do not alter, abuse, or misuse these cartridges and/or respirator.
  • Do not use with beards, facial hair, or other conditions that prevent a good seal between the face and the faceseal of the respirator.

Time Use Limitations:
Replace cartridge in accordance with an established change schedule or earlier if smell, taste, or irritation from contaminants is detected.

What chemicals does an organic vapor cartridge protect against?

It is used mainly to protect against solvents, such as those in oil based paints. Other organic vapors it absorbs would include paint thinner, lacquer thinner, turpentine and fuel vapors.

How does an organic vapor filter work?

When organic vapors are drawn through an organic vapor cartridge, the air is filtered as vapors condense into the carbon pores. Vapors move through the cartridge from one pore to the next. This occurs more quickly for small volatile vapors with lower boiling points (e.g., acetone).

What does an acid gas cartridge protect against?

When properly used with an approved 3M respirator properly fitted, this respirator cartridge helps provide respiratory protection from certain organic vapors, chlorine, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide, chlorine dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, or hydrogen fluoride.

What is a organic vapor?

Organic vapors typically refer to liquids that are petroleum based (from organic carbon) evaporate quickly (creating vapors.) Products like turpentine, gasoline, paint thinner, urethanes and solvent based epoxy all will give off organic vapors in varying amounts.
