It looks like sloppy assembly on the insert. Notice how the top rail extends past the side (stile).

Also, something isn't plumb. Either the whole patio door is out of plumb or just the insert. With the insert removed, does the door close properly with no gap?

OMG, just returned from a meeting and see my Houzz BFF's have out done themselves with ideas. What an amazing community! And Lynne - you are double amazing with your plethora of images/thoughts. I'm impressed by what you did in Excel. I don't think in 3-D so these examples help immensely. We will remove the electrical for different lighting too. Btw, Hubbardton Forge is absolutely one of my favorites. Ellyram7 - Couldn't agree more with the glass, the more the better. We don't have any privacy issues which is awesome. Also thinking of opening the porte cochere and exposing the beautiful beams for more light, leaving it solid over the front door. Selling the front doors, another great idea. Wow, lots of options. Thank you all.

Your puppy is darling and in time with good training will become your best friend without messes! Get a trainer to work with you ASAP if you can. That will help. Crates are great but at 4 months be very careful how the crate is introduced. For the toys, I have a beautiful basket and my Red Standard Poodle (3 now) knows this is where toys are kept. I’ve not been able to train him to pick up the toys and put them back, but at least all toys are there. I have a hand towel by each door (hidden / ex black floor to ceiling panels by sliding doors and a small black hand towel on the floor under the panels) and always wipe his feet before he comes inside! A large horse brush by the door is used to very quickly brush his body after he plays outside. I find carpets helpful and my floor is a hardwood Swedish finish. The light wood is more forgiving than dark. Good luck! And never give up! You and puppy can figure this out!

Sliding glass door with built-in pet door

After heating and cooling the outdoors for a few years, We had to call several area glass installers until we finally found someone who could install it directly into our patio slider door. It's a bit of a process, and not cheap ($900) but with 3 dogs it was.worth it to us. They come out and measure exact size of glass, then order a special glass cut for the dog door opening and the dog door insert. It took a few weeks and then they came back out, removed the original glass, attached the unit, placed it into the door frame and we love it. No drafts, the flap has heavy duty magnets and a security door to close it when needed. We appreciate being able to actually use the patio door without having to squeeze thru the kind you place between the frame and door.

How large are the crates? You could use a sliding pocket door system like you see on the older style entertainment centers where the doors open up and slide into the sides of the unit. You could do it like a garage door with the hinges on the top. That would allow you to do wider doors without using two sets of hinges.

I would try to trim the top rail of the insert back to where it is flush with side stile of the insert. Extend a straight line from the edge of the stile up across the rail. Assuming the insert is aluminum or vinyl, use a file and carefully remove material to the line. That will help close the gap somewhat. Then use a self adhesive weatherstrip as Graywings^^ suggested.

Actually, I would uninstall the insert & reinstall it, shimming where necessary, to try to get it plumb. (or out of plumb, whichever it takes to close the gap on the slider door.) Uninstalled, it will be easier to file that excess off the top rail, too. Then add the weatherstripping if it is still needed.

Those door types are unwieldy at best, even when installed correctly. They never seal well, and tend to break often. A better choice is through the wall door, that leads out into a protected overhang.

The other problem with such inserts is that the gap they leave between the two panes of glass in the partly-open door admits un-conditioned air and insects. Air conditioners in double-hung and slider windows have the same problem. The fix for both is to stuff closed-cell foam into the gaps.

DavidR can you possibly share a link or photo of the type of closed cell foam you think could work for this gap? We will of course need it to stick to one side and not the other, so we can still actually use the door.

Live_wire-oak what you are suggesting is not an option for us.

I have the same issue. Go to ace and get some weatherstripping, I used rubber, but I know exactly what is gonna happen when you put it on the door- the door will still have a gap because the weatherstripping is equal all the way down the door. What id suggest is cutting a wooden dowel, like you would use for security and locking the ajar sliding door, but cut it to be about a quarter inch too long. That way, when you compress the door against the weather stripping, it will compress the area without a gap and the stripping will fill the gap nicely.

How do you winterize a dog door on a sliding glass door?

Winterizing a Dog Door Use silicone caulk to close any air gaps and holes. Add weatherstripping around the door frame. Add magnets to the bottom of door so the flaps stay in place to help reduce heat loss. Reinforce flimsy door flaps with industrial plastic curtain material.

How does a dog door work on a sliding glass door?

When installing a pet door in a glass door, a panel is inserted into the sliding door track. The new panel that is inserted has glass on top and a pet door flap at the bottom. Once you install a doggie door in a glass door, the slider of the door slides in its track against the sliding glass pet door panel.
