Overview – Lake of the Ozarks

Waterfront homes for sale at lake of the ozarks with boat slips

Lake of the Ozarks in central Missouri is Missouri’s premier lake destination with more than 1,150 miles of shoreline and a surface area of 54,000 acres. There are more than 70,000 homes along the lake, as well as world-class boating, golfing, shopping and fishing. Lake of the Ozarks is unique in that it is the largest man-made lake in the United States that isn’t used for flood control. As a result, the lake’s surface elevation rarely varies more than five feet, creating ideal conditions for private development within a few feet of the shoreline. Spectacular Ozarks Plateau topography has helped to transform the lake into a major resort area, and in 2015 USA Today named Lake of the Ozarks the “Best Recreational Lake” in the United States. Real estate at the lake is as diverse as the lake itself with buildable waterfront lots selling for $80,000 all the way up to $6 million for a luxury waterfront home.

The North Shore of Lake of the Ozarks covers the towns of Lake Ozark, Lakeland, Eldon and Barnett. This area encompasses the main Osage arm of the lake from the 0-mile marker west to the 10-mile marker and all the Gravois Arm of the Lake.

The portion of the Lake offers properties for buyers at all price points, while delivering a diverse range of entertainment options. Many residents and tourists on the North Shore choose this part of the Lake for simple convenience: It’s closest for people coming from Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska.

The North Shore’s Gravois Arm allows buyers to get on the water at a typically lower price than other areas of the Lake, but Six-Mile Cove (previously known as “Millionaire’s Cove”) – one of the most sought-after areas on the Lake – is right across the channel.

SOUTH REGION back to overview View homes on the South Shores

The south side of Lake of the Ozarks covers the towns of Camdenton and parts of Roach. This area encompasses the Big and Little Niangua Arms of the Lake.

The county seat of Camden County, Camdenton is where many Lake residents go for governmental services. Situated within the south side of Lake of the Ozarks is Bridal Cave, rated as one of the most scenic caverns in America. Another attraction is the Ozarks Amphitheater, an open-air performance venue with more than 10,000 seats that hosts world-class musical acts. The south side of the Lake also is closest to Interstate 44, which run between St. Louis and Tulsa, Oklahoma, and communities south and east of the lake such as Lebanon, Rolla and Fort Leonard Wood, a 61,000-acre U.S. Army base.

The south side of the lake features narrower channels and more shallow water, which makes it less conducive to larger boats. As a result, the waters are calmer and quieter, which appeals to residents and tourists seeking a more idyllic experience.

EAST REGION back to overview View homes on the East Shores

The east side of Lake of the Ozarks covers the towns of Osage Beach and Linn Creek. This area encompasses the main Osage arm of the lake from the 11-mile marker to the 31-mile marker and the Grand Glaize Arm of the Lake.

This is the heart of Lake of the Ozarks in the sense that is the hub of commercial activity. Shopping, restaurant and entertainment options abound, both on the water and off. The Grand Glaize Arm is unique because it abuts Lake of the Ozarks State Park – Missouri’s largest state park, 90 percent of which is undeveloped residentially and commercially.

Geographically, the east side is centrally located, which makes it the most commercially diverse part of the Lake. As a result, there tend to be fewer residential opportunities available, but those that do exist are highly desirable.

WEST REGION back to overview View homes on the West Shores

The west side of Lake of the Ozarks covers the towns of Laurie, Gravois Mills, Sunrise Beach, Climax Springs and Edwards, Villages and Porta Cima. This area encompasses the Osage Arm from the 32-mile marker to the 60-mile marker.

On the lower reaches of this portion of the lake boat traffic is relatively heavy, but the lake is much quieter on the upper mile markers. Many people from Nebraska and Kansas choose to live on this part of the lake because it’s closest to home. In terms of property characteristics, this is one of the most diverse portions of the lake. Budget-conscious buyers can find homes in this stretch of the lake that includes many of the Lake’s most luxurious homes in the Villages and Porta Cima.

The west side of the lake is home to the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, named one of the nation’s “must-see” boating events according to Powerboat Magazine. This unsanctioned top-speed race is the largest boat race in the Midwest and draws more than 100,000 spectators.
