You're not required to file a claim. Here are some things to consider if you are an auto or property customer:

  • Was anyone injured?
  • Did you damage someone else's property or vehicle?
  • Is it unsafe to live in your home or drive your car?
  • Are the damages above your deductible?

How long do I have to file a claim?

If you plan to file a claim, you should do so now. Generally, for property policies, you have at least 6 months to file a claim. In some states, and depending on your policy, it may be longer.

What type of information do we ask for when you file a claim?

You should file your claim with Travelers as soon as possible, even if you don't have all the necessary information. The faster you do so, the sooner we can start assisting you. You will have the opportunity to update information. Here is what we typically look for:

  • Photos of the damage, if applicable
  • Your contact information
  • The name and contact information of any other involved parties
  • Policy information, if available
  • The type of loss you are reporting (auto, home, etc.) Remember, in the event of auto damage, your policy does not include mechanical breakdowns.
  • The date the incident occurred
  • A description of what happened
  • A description of any injuries

When you call to file your claim, a Travelers Claim Customer Service professional will document the details of the loss and may provide you with a claim number. Your claim will then be assigned to one of our Claim professionals.

Can I get a damage estimate before filing a claim?

Yes, you can obtain an estimate before filing a claim. Once you have your estimate and if you are wondering if your estimate is above your deductible, please log into MyTravelers® to compare your deductible to your estimate.

Will my rates increase for my personal auto policy if I file a claim?

If you file a claim and we make a payment, it is very likely that your premium will increase.  We can’t tell you exactly how much this will be because there are so many different factors that can affect your premium at the time of renewal. If a claim does impact your premium, the change may last for approximately 3 to 5 years.

What if the accident was the other driver’s fault?

Why did I get a check from Travelers insurance?

After your Claim professional determines the amount of your covered loss and applies any applicable deductible, they can either send you a check in the mail or you can have your payment sent electronically via one of our ePay options, which allows money to be directly deposited into your bank or PayPal account.

Is Travelers insurance good at paying claims?

Yes. Travelers has an A++ score from AM Best, meaning it has a "superior" ability to pay claims. And its very low complaint index of 0.19 for home insurance and 0.37 for auto insurance mean customers tend to be satisfied with their service overall.
