Translation of verbal phrases to mathematical phrases worksheets with answers

Steps for Translating Algebraic Expressions to Verbal Phrases

Step 1: Identify the operations used in the algebraic expression such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Step 2: Create a sentence where each of these operations is represented by a vocabulary term put together with the numbers.

If a variable is used, we can say "a number" or "some number."

You might use "sum" or "add" for addition, "minus" or "difference" for subtraction, "product" or "times" for multiplication, or "quotient" for division. These are just examples. There are many more!

Vocabulary for Algebraic Expressions

Here are some words you may use to represent each operation, but you can also come up with some of your own, as long as they represent the correct operation!

Now let's walk through two examples that follow these steps to translate algebraic expressions into verbal phrases.

Example Problem 1- Translating Algebraic Expressions

Write a verbal expression that represents the following algebraic expression:

{eq}3x - 4 {/eq}

Step 1: Here we have multiplication between 3 and x and subtraction between that term and 4.

Step 2: For multiplication, we have plenty of terms to choose from. Let's use "product." We can say "the product of 3 and some number."

For subtraction, we also have some choices. If we use "less than," we can create a sentence saying:

{eq}4\:less\:than\:the\: product\: of\: 3\: and\: some\: number {/eq}

Example Problem 2- Translating Algebraic Expressions

Write a verbal expression that represents the following algebraic expression:

{eq}3 + x + \frac{y}{2} {/eq}

Step 1: Here we have addition of 3, x, and y divided by 2.

Step 2: Let's start with the division. We can use "quotient" to say "the quotient of a number and 2."

Now let's look at the addition. We can use the keyword "sum" and say

{eq}the\:sum\:of\:3,\:a\:number,\:and\:the\:quotient\:of\:another\:number\:and\:2 {/eq}

  • Notice here, we change the word representing y to "another number" in order to show that it is a different variable from x, which is mentioned first in our phrase.
