4.0 out of 5 stars LIttermaid "hack" makes life so much easier

I have had a number of Littermaids over the years. They have typically lasted a year or two, and I have been satisfied with that. For the current one I have, I finally wised up and got inspired by some Pinterest projects to "hack" my Littermaid. I raised it up, with the waste bin hovering over a large cut-out opening in a large Rubbermaid Drawer. I cut out the bottom panel of the littermaid waste bin, and insert a large trash bag, securing it to the bin sides with binder clips. I use masking tape or blue painters tape to create seals along the edges and to secure the bin in place. Waste then gets deposited into that big trash bag, inside the drawer. I have two large cats and I only have to empty the bin every 10 days to 2 weeks. This is the only way to go, in my book. Sometimes, of course, litter gets stuck to the bottom of the Littermaid so I am scraping it every couple of days. Besides this, I also have two water fountains  PetSafe Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain  and a dry food dispenser  Petmate Pet Cafรฉ Feeder, 6 pound capacity, Pearl Tan . Each of those last about two weeks as well before having to refill them. When I travel and have a friend check on my cats, there is almost nothing for them to do but play with the cats!

5.0 out of 5 stars Life changer! Highly recommended

Iโ€™d give it 10* if I could. I have 2 cats and one of them refuses to use one particular litter box if there was anything left in it, irrespective of the other 2 litter boxes in the house. She would just do her business next to it. As I work full time I cannot clean the boxes during the day. The Littermaid solved the problem completely as the box is always clean so no accidents. It works a dream, I followed the customer advice from the reviews from the amazon.co and used a bag inside the receptacle -easy peasy and no more buying receptacles. Yes, you do need to keep an eye on it from time to time, litter gets stuck to the rack occasionally, that is why they provide a useful scoop designed to clean the rack too. It does what it says on the tin, amazingly there is no smell and the cats will always have a clean loo. I use pets at home own clumping ultra and it seems to be the right consintency. It is more expensive than the average litter but it lasts way longer as it cleans only what is dirtied, no crumbs left so basically itโ€™s the same value for money.

4.0 out of 5 stars 6 Month Update-Excellent Customer Service

Note, I contacted customer service today. They tell me the gears are stripped. I am sending them a receipt, they are sending me a new litterbox. I do not have to send the old dirty one back. I have to say this is top customer service, so I have changed my rating back to a 4.

To Littermaid, I would ask you make a bigger model for those of us with large breed cats who pee over the edge.

One cat started peeing too close to the end and a mess would result with pee leaking on the litter mat. Purchased an add on gizmo online to prevent this. Cat started peeing too close to the gizmo, and pee ended up under the gizmo. I found a DIY workaround with duct tape and fixed the pee issue.

Now 6 months in, the rake apparatus starts making a racket when it reaches the lid for the waste receptacle. It seems to have worn and because the plastic is not smooth anymore, it's not able to lift the lid. It just gets stuck makes a racket backs up and tries again.

I really liked having a box that scooped the litter for you. None of the self-cleaning litter boxes are set and forget. All of them require maintenance. With 2 large Ragdolls, I had to empty the waste receptacle every 3 days. I lined the receptacle with grocery bags to save money on receptacles. Now before the littermaid, I scooped and disposed of the used litter every morning. After 3 days when you open that waste bin, it really stinks. I got used to very quickly removing the bag and tieing it up. Also, cleaning the box is difficult when compared to a non-automated litter box. The box is heavy and the gears are difficult to clean.

Littermaid, you have been around for some time now. Some innovation should fix the issues people are having with your boxes. The cost to the consumer is high just to have the box fail after just over 6 months. For that reason, I am changing my rating from 4 to 2 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars makes litter handling less but not zero

This is my second littermaid box. The previous one lasted 11 years before the motor just wasn't strong enough anymore. I think it lasted that long for us because I was always very careful to not overfill with litter. I kept a scoop in the bucket of litter and added a little more when it started to get bare patches (usually weekly), but I really tried to keep just enough litter to catch the waste but not enough to stress the motor. The instructions will come with a recommendation for a few brands of premium clumping litter. Premium litter is important. Off brand litter doesn't clump as fully and the urine clumps can get torn apart and left behind by the fork that rakes through the litter.
This is not a never-touch-litter again solution. This is touch less often. The sides are high, buy my cat still manages to scatter litter on the floor. We built a table box, wide enough to sit the littermaid on, and tall enough to hold a rubbermaid tote. The tote gets lined with a kitchen garbage bag. Take one litter waste receptacle and cut the bottom out. Cut a slot in the table box that lines up with the waste receptacle, and now I change the garbage bag in the tote every 3-4 weeks instead of every 5-6 days. Odour is contained behind the doors, likely assisted by the clumping litter. The cat has no problem jumping up and back down again. I think she likes high ground in a vulnerable moment. When I empty the tote, I also check the path for the wheels (that move the forks) to ensure that they're clean. Muc
h more dust appears to build up along those paths than the previous version I had, so I hope that won't end up to be a weak point. This shiny blue plastic shows up much more dust than the previous dull beige plastic. I don't care for it because it always *looks* dusty, but it doesn't make it any less functional.

5.0 out of 5 stars Size does matter!

It is significantly bigger than the classic littermaid. I wish I had gotten this size before. I have two forest cats (Siberian and Maine coon) they recently decided that they prefer to use the box at the same time. The classic size barely accommodated one cat. Now they can use the boxes together! I use world's best cat litter and kitchen/grocery bags to line the catch bin so I generate less waste and save dollars. I know these boxes don't last as long as they used to. The smaller one is just over a year-old and still going strong though. I'll be happy to get two to three years out of them with two cats for the convenience they provide. 1 year warranty is included as well.
