Sound
This is a solid fiddle for a beginner I think, based on my experience with other stringed instruments. The sound is bright and full as the nicely arched thick maple body would suggest. It has a fairly heavy lamination, which may dampen it a bit- as a novice I really can't distinguish, but an immediate improvement over a cheap chinese fiddle.

Setup
The Rothenberg was fully set up when it arrived- the pegs took a bit of working in the first several days- whenever the pegs popped out of tune, I loosened the string and tried to work the pegs in by turning them around the hole arches with a slight inward pressure. The violin was holding tune much better after a few days, and has no proiblems with this now The pegs have settled about 1/16 of an inch short of being flush with the far side of the peg
box- all are even so it appears all has been cut precisely..

Appearance
The fiddle is all maple, with a warm syrypy overtone and medfium flame marking on the back, with the name "ROTHENBERG" stamped up at the top of the back. The inlaid purfling is EXCELLENT and grain patterns extend from the body into it. Some of the best purfling I've seen anywhere near this price,

I've played guitar for years and have owned several classical and steel string guitars and a banjo. I've been quite pleased with the Rothenberg violin from the start. If it was a guitar , I'd say it's a very playable solid instrument that might sell in the $150- to $250 guitar range. Not junk.

Customer Service
This was advertisedas a German fiddle. I think I believe it- definitely a large improvement over a cheap Chinese fiddle I got a few weeks before for $37. Yet I like fiddling so much I knew I had to have a better one, and I found a great one for under $100! I paid only $79.99 when I ordered the Celtic version, but this one was priced at $89.99.

Components
This fiddle has large metal tuners on all the strings- the fiddle I ordered had an alloy tailpiece with smaller tuners and I thought these might be clunky when they sent the wrong
one- I really like them now, the fiddle looks like it means business! And the tuners work well

Overall Comments
As a novice fiddler, I'm very pleased with the Rothenberg Flame back violin- I doubt that you could find a better fiddle new for under $100. I was actually sent the wrong fiddle- I'd ordered a Rothenberg Celtic fiddle, of lighter wood, and actually listed at $10 cheaper than the Flame back I recieved, but after much
much deliberation on my part as to which one to order. So I was just inclined to keep then the more expensiove one that came. I love it now!
