First check both ends of the drive shaft for play. Second, remove the differential cover and check the gears, gear mesh, and look closely at the oil as well.

Time to drain, remove the cover, and get a look at what's going on inside. Right around 14sec in you start to hear things start to kick in under load which makes me start to think bad pinion bearing maybe, which would make sense to lead to gear chatter as you let off the gas. At least that is my thought after listening a couple times. Has that jeep been regeared?

Check it with the indicator at several teeth, evenly spaced. It could be that the carrier didn't go back in correctly (crud under a bearing race for example) and the old wear pattern is not the same as the old, gear play not even, etc. Blue the gears (marking compound) and check both the drive, and especially the coast side (since that's the side with pressure when the noise occurs). Here's a study guide that might help: https://www.freeasestudyguides.com/r...-patterns.html Maybe I've misunderstood the sequence of events; Did the noise problem happen shortly after replacing wheel bearings, or removing the carrier, or after both were done together, or something else?

I wish that everyone who asks for help would take the time to post the resolution to their issue after asking for help. It would be helpful to share the fix, not just the issues or symptons. Thank you!

Why does my truck make a noise when I let off the gas?A leak in the catalytic converter causes the noise that you hear when you let go of the gas pedal.
What causes rear end whine on deceleration?A whine during deceleration may mean there is a bad or loose pinion bearing. A howl during acceleration may indicate the same problem. Rumble or whining sounds only at speeds greater than 20 mph could be a sign of a worn carrier bearing. The sound may change while cornering.
What causes a rear end to make noise?A knocking or clicking sound may be due to the splines on the axle shafts being worn out, in which case the defective shaft has to be replaced. Another reason for this may be chipped teeth on one or more of the gears in the differential. Again, they'll need to be replaced.
What does a broken diff sound like?Hearing an increase in the level of humming noises or gear grinding is a way of knowing almost for sure that you have a worn out differential. Usually the humming gets louder under acceleration. When this occurs it's best to check the condition of your differential and replace if it's in a rough condition.
