(NEXSTAR) – You’ve likely heard about the Powerball jackpot, which has reached an estimated world record $1.6 billion after 39 consecutive drawings without a winner, according to the lottery. If you’re ready to try your luck for the largest pot in history but aren’t sure how to play, we have you covered.

Powerball is one of the most popular lottery games in the U.S. and is played in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The game has been played since 1992.

Since 2021, Powerball drawings have been held three times a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday (previously, drawings were held on Wednesdays and Saturdays) at 10:59 p.m. ET.

A ticket, which can be purchased at various retailers, will set you back $2, plus an extra $1 if you opt-in for Power Play (more on that in a moment). In some states, tickets can only be purchased with cash.

When you purchase a ticket, you can select five numbers from 1 to 69, and one Powerball number from 1 to 26. When picking your numbers, you can decide to multiply non-jackpot prizes by 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 times using the Power Play option. The 10-times multiplier isn’t available when the jackpot is larger than $150 million, as it is now.

Too much pressure to pick the numbers that could change your life? You can ask for a Quick Pick instead, which means the system will generate your numbers.

If you’re willing to pay an additional $1, you can play your Powerball numbers again for the Double Play drawing, which is held after the Powerball drawings. This option is only available in 13 jurisdictions, according to Powerball.

Ticket sales are stopped before each drawing, typically a half hour to an hour beforehand, depending on your state. Some lotteries will also sell Powerball tickets online, but only to individuals living within their jurisdiction.

During the drawing, five white balls are pulled first. Their order doesn’t matter, just the number. The red Powerball number drawn must match that on your ticket.

If any of your numbers match, hang onto your ticket and sign it. If you were to lose your winning ticket and another person finds it, they can claim it – unless you’ve signed it.

There are nine ways to win Powerball, ranging from $4 to the jackpot, which will continue to grow until it is won. Where you can claim your prize and the length of time you have to collect it will also vary by jurisdiction.

If you’re lucky enough to win the jackpot, you can receive your pot as an annuity (30 graduated payments over 29 years) or as a lump sum. Federal and local income taxes will apply to both.

You may want to think twice before collecting the cash option though. Winners of giant jackpots nearly always take the cash, and financial advisers say that might be a mistake.

Officials urge anyone lucky enough to win a Powerball jackpot to consult a financial adviser before showing up at a lottery office for an oversized check.

To play, pick up a POWERBALL playslip at an authorized Florida Lottery retailer, use your Florida Lottery mobile app to create a digital playslip, or pruchase a QUICKTICKET™ in the check-out lane at select Lottery retail locations.

Each playslip contains five panels (A-E), allowing you to play up to five plays (one play per panel). In each panel:

1. Select five numbers from 1 through 69 in the upper play area, or mark the QP (Quick Pick) box and let the terminal randomly pick some or all of your numbers.
2. Select your Powerball number from 1 through 26 in the lower play area or mark the QP box for the terminal to randomly select your Powerball number.
3. For a chance to win cash prizes in an additional drawing held after the POWERBALL drawing, using the same numbers played on your POWERBALL ticket, select the Double Play box. Double Play costs $1 more per play.

8. Give your completed playslip and payment to the retailer. You will receive a printed ticket with your numbers, draw date(s), and indication of any selected add-on features (Power Play and/or Double Play).

Drawings are held Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday nights at 10:59 p.m., ET. Tickets may be purchased until 10:00 p.m., ET, on the night of the drawing. Tickets purchased after that time will be applicable for the next drawing.

The Double Play add-on feature gives players the chance to win up to $10 million in an additional drawing held following the POWERBALL drawing, using the same numbers played on their POWERBALL ticket. Double Play tickets cost an additional $1 per play.

($1) DOUBLE PLAY® Odds and Prizes

Prior to MUSL conducting the official POWERBALL drawing, a Power Play multiplier number (between 2 and 5; or 10 if the advertised jackpot is $150 million or less) will be selected. This multiplier number will be displayed during the drawing, in which five out of 69 numbers (white balls) and one Powerball number between 1 and 26 (red ball) will be drawn at random. There are nine ways to win a POWERBALL prize by matching the winning numbers drawn in the official drawing for the date played. Match all five numbers plus the Powerball to win the jackpot, or match any of the non-jackpot-winning combinations to win other great cash prizes!

All POWERBALL prizes are set payouts, with the exception of the jackpot prize. The jackpot prize will be shared among winners in all POWERBALL states. The jackpot will be paid in 30 annual payments or a one-time cash payment of a reduced amount. If there is no jackpot winner, the money in the jackpot pool rolls over to the next POWERBALL drawing.

All POWERBALL prizes must be claimed in the state where the ticket was purchased. POWERBALL prizes must be claimed within 180 days after the winning draw date; and within 60 days after the winning draw date if selecting the cash option payment method. Federal income taxes will be withheld from POWERBALL prizes as required by the Internal Revenue Code at the time payments are made. Any additional federal, state and/or local taxes shall be the responsibility of the winner. Prizes up to $599 may be claimed at any authorized Florida Lottery retailer; prizes $600 to less than $1 million may be claimed at any Florida Lottery district office; prizes $1 million or more must be claimed at Lottery Headquarters in Tallahassee. Beginning May 25, 2022, the names of Lottery winners claiming prizes of $250,000 or greater will be temporarily exempt from public disclosure (pursuant to F.S. 24.1051(3)(a)) for 90 days from the date the prize is claimed, unless otherwise waived by the winner.
