Novena Prayer

Mother of Perpetual Help, with the greatest confidence we come before your holy picture, to be inspired by the example of your life. We think of you at that moment, when, full of faith and trust, you accepted God’s call to be the mother of His Son. Help us, your children, to accept with joy our own calling in life. When you learned that your cousin Elizabeth was in need, you immediately went to serve her and offer your help. Help us, like you, to be concerned with others. We think of you, Mother, at the foot of the cross. Your heart must have bled to see your Son in agony; but your joy was great when he rose from the dead, victorious over the powers of evil. Mother of Sorrows, help us through the trials and disappointments of life; help us not to lose heart; may we share with you and your Son the joy of having courageously faced up to all the challenges of life. Amen.

Thanksgiving Prayer

Mother of Perpetual Help, with grateful hearts, we join you in thanking God for all the wonderful things He has done for us, especially for giving us Jesus, your Son, as our Redeemer. O God our Creator we thank you for the gift of life and all the gifts of nature; our senses and faculties, our talents and abilities. We thank you for creating us in your image and likeness and for giving us this earth to use and develop, to respect and cherish. Despite our failures you continue to show your love for us today by increasing the life of your Spirit in us at the Eucharistic table. Finally, we thank you, loving Father, for giving us Mary, the Mother of your Son, to be Our Mother of Perpetual Help. We are grateful for all the favours we have received through her intercession. We pray that those past favours may inspire us to greater confidence in your loving mercy and to seek the aid of our Mother of Perpetual Help. Amen

HISTORY OF THE DEVOTION

The devotion to the picture of Our Lady of perpetual Succour is of very ancient origin. It was first venerated in the island of Crete near Greece from whence it was carried to italy and placed in the Church of St.Mathew in Apostle in Rome between the Basilicas of St. Mary Major and St.John Lateran then in charge of the Augustinian Brothers. The Madonna in the picture, it would appear, had called herself, "Holy Mary of Perpetual Succour", while in Crete it was known as "Our Lady of the Angels". This was in 1499, it seems to have been painted about the year 1455 or even earlier, and it was restored or re-painted in the 19th Century , making it appear as it is at present. In 1798 the Church of St.Mathew was destroyed and the Picture passed into oblivion till the year 1866 when it came into the hands of the Redemptorists at the express command of Pope Pius IX. Since then the Redemptorist Fathers have been the propagators of the devotion of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour wherever they preach retreats and Missions.

EXPLANATION OF THE PICTURE

The picture of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour belongs to the group of Passion icons of the 15th century. These paintings are characterized by the symbols of the passion and the austere features of the Madonna and the Child. Around the crowned head of the Madonna are the words "Mother of God". On both sides are the two archangels Michael and Gabriel with their respective names inscribe above their head and holding the instruments of the Passion: St.Michael holding the spear and the sponge and St.Gabriel the Cross. At the sight of the Cross the Child Jesus is stuck by fear his feet strike each other and knock off a struck by fear his feet strike each other and knock off a sandal from this foot and he clings to this mother for support. The features of the Madonna are gave conveying a message of hope and an assurance of help to all those who in identical circumstances will appeal to her for help. These is also a plea in her eyes: do not hurt my Son more by sin and I will help you by his goodness.

Which novena do we pray every Wednesday?

Novenas are common to Mother Mary (recited every Saturday), Saint George (common by the Orthodox and recited every Wednesday), Saint Jude (recited every Thursday) and others.

How do you do the novena to the Mother of Perpetual Help prayer?

Mother of Perpetual Help, with the greatest confidence we come before your holy picture, to be inspired by the example of your life. We think of you at that moment, when, full of faith and trust, you accepted God's call to be the mother of His Son. Help us, your children, to accept with joy our own calling in life.

What is the most powerful novena in the Catholic Church?

Every year my family participates in the Three Impossible Things Novena. It is the most powerful novena I have ever said, and I know many people who have had prayers answered through appealing to the intercession of the Blessed Mother in this novena.

What is the 9 day novena prayer?

This Novena is traditionally prayed for the nine days before Pentecost, praying for the descent of the gifts of the Holy Spirit: holy fear, piety, fortitude, knowledge, understanding, counsel, wisdom, and the Fruits of the Spirit. You can pray the Holy Spirit Novena with Chika Anyanwu.

Does a novena have to be 9 consecutive days?

Many of the most popular and widely-prayed novenas begin or end on a Saint's feast day. And it's important to note that while most novenas are indeed nine days long, there are some exceptions (like the St. Andrew Christmas novena, which is 25 days long!).
