6. Virgil Abloh: Freedom of Speech, Brooklyn Museum

The late visionary artist Virgil Abloh played an important role in fashion, music, art and design, and culture for the past 10-15 years. From creating his own brand “Off-White” to throning the menswear creative director seat at Louis Vuitton before his passing, his stake in modern contemporary art and design is undeniable. Now, his post-humous “Figures of Speech” exhibit dives into his never-before-seen archive to reflect on the communicative power of design. Abloh uses the power of his language and quotation marks to put a Black-cultural-experience perspective on traditional white-crafted structures.

10. Wolfgang Tillmans: To look without fear, MoMA

Photographer Wolfgang Tillmans challenges you to enter his work “though your own life and eyes,” and his series of photographic exploration at the MoMA is a spectacle you have to see to believe. Exploring the idea of “what it means to live today,” you’ll see everything from the original “Blonde” Frank Ocean album cover to astronomical phenomenon to intimate nudes. 12. Alex Katz: Gathering, Guggenheim

Experience the spiral Frank Lloyd Wright rotunda in the Guggenheim like you never have before, thanks to Alex Katz’s new exhibit. Taking inspiration from his surroundings of downtown New York City and coastal Maine, you can find an assortment of paintings, oil sketches, collages, drawings, prints, and freestanding “cutout” works that tell the story of post-war NYC throughout the years. 13. David LaChapelle: make BELIEVE, Fotografiska

Legendary American photographer David LaChapelle proudly brings his first ever New York solo show to the Fotografiska, titled “make BELIEVE.” In this exhibit, you’ll get a visual walkthrough of some of the most intergenerational staples in our culture’s history. 14. Do Ho Suh, Lehmann Maupin

London artist Do Ho Suh is center stage in this Lehmann Maupin exhibit that features multiple rooms and floors dedicated to his works. He ties together main themes of home, memory, psychic space, and displacement throughout his pieces. From his “Inverted Monument” structure to his long running “Specimen” series (featured above), there’s a wide range of elements and art forms used to tell his take on politics and the subjectivity of memory.

15. Tom Sachs: Spaceships, Acquavella Galleries

New York based artist Tom Sachs explores the themes of spaceships in this exhibit of the same name. It consists of a series of sculptures that dive deeper into the philosophical undertones of spaceships, space travel, and people. He investigates the accepted understandings, assumptions, epistemology, and consensus of what constitutes a spaceship, and playfully recreates his own models into something that more fits his mindset.

16. Hope Gangloff, Susan Inglett Gallery

Hope Gangloff’s vibrant and colorful portraits of the natural world are something to be witnessed at Susan Inglett Gallery in Chelsea. She uses her keen eye and bright color palette to craft some of the most beautiful views of her everyday life, including bright rays of sunshine gleaming on Lake George and a rendering of her backyard barn in the rain. Her use of color theory, form, and scale are just some of the way she best portrays the fragmented narrative of her life.

19. Celebrating the City, Museum of the City of New York

The Museum of the City of New York already had a fantastic photography collection, and their ongoing exhibit “Celebrate the City” has taken it up another notch. This collection of images curated by the nonprofit organization Joy of Giving Something is a true celebration of New York and New Yorkers. You’ll find some of the most intriguing and light-hearted photos of the city’s skyline, residents, streetscapes, events, and so much more throughout NYC’s history.
