Sore feet cause misery,  making every step a challenge.  Unsightly feet cause emotional anguish and can restrict social interaction in severe cases.  If you are reluctant to wear sandals or walk barefoot on a beach because of toenail fungus or dry cracked heels we offer hope in the form of effective essential oil for foot fungus, foot odor, and even athlete’s foot.

Get Rid of Toenail Fungus Infections With Manuka Oil

Foot problems can either be from structural issues such as flat feet or from topical irritations such as athlete’s foot. More serious issues result from serious diseases such as diabetes.

Toenail Fungus is No Match for Essential Oils. One of the most stubborn and frustrating conditions we hear about is toenail fungus; it afflicts millions of people.

The fungal infection causes thick, yellow nails to form that look misshapen and are resistant to treatment. There are several forms of toenail fungus which make treating it difficult, as most over the counter remedies only address a narrow range of fungus types.

Sometimes toenail fungus is accompanied by a yeast infection that complicates treatment. Using essentials oil for toenail fungus, particularly Manuka oil,  covers a wide array of fungus and yeast strains and if used consistently, has a good track record of clearing these infections.

Patience is required when treating toenail fungus as it can take 6 months or more before the infected toenail has completely grown out.

Our Manuka oil controls the infection due to the strong antifungal and antimicrobial elements naturally produced by the plant. [2]

Treating the fungus simply requires the application of a few drops of Manuka oil directly onto the affected nails twice daily.

Most people immediately experience relief from itching and notice the surrounding skin is soothed. The antibacterial properties promote healing so the infection does not spread. Manuka oil deeply penetrates the nail bed and surrounding tissue.  We recommend that you cover the nails with fine cotton fabric or cotton socks for at least 30 minutes to allow the oil to absorb.

Manuka Essential Oil Foot Soak

Another alternative is to soak your feet for 15 minutes per

day in 2 quarts of water mixed with 10 drops of Manuka oil. This can help prevent the fungal infection from progressing and feels wonderful.  Using essential oils for foot fungus on a daily basis is one of the best ways of ensuring the infection does not spread to other nails. Since the oil is so mild, using it several times a day will not irritate the surrounding skin.

Toenail fungus is stubborn but can be overcome using the penetrating magic of Manuka oil. It gets deep into the tissue where the fungus multiplies if left unchecked.

Essential Oil Treatment for Athlete’s Foot

Like toenail fungus, athlete’s foot is caused by a fungus which is usually detected by itching and burning between the toes. This fungus lives in the warm moist areas of the foot and as such can be difficult to treat - plus it is highly contagious. This is where essential oils for athlete’s foot treatment really show their power.

Both Manuka and Tamanu oils have strong penetrating abilities. [3] When applied to affected areas, they get beneath the surface infection to knock out further growth. This is due to their antifungal and antibacterial components. In addition, Tamanu oil particularly moisturizes and heals the cracks that develop between the toes.

Manuka Essential Oil - It’s All About the Triketones

The active components of Manuka Oil are Sesquiterpenes, Triketones, particularly Leptospermone, Isoleptospermone, and Flavesone. These properties give Manuka Oil its antioxidant antifungal antibacterial power.

Tamanu Oil has strong Omega 6 and Omega 9 acids (Oleic Acid, Linoleic Acid) which give it antibacterial and antioxidative power.  [4] Together these potent essential oils are very effective in treating toenail fungus and yeast-based infections.

Consistency is the key to combating foot infections

The area between the toes is a  perfect breeding ground for fungus and yeast growth.  In the presence of athlete’s foot infection or toenail fungus, daily hygiene must be even more meticulous than usual.  This knocks back the growth, giving your body a chance to handle it through the immune system. This also prevents infecting other parts of the foot.

Athlete’s Foot Treatment Protocol

Thoroughly wash the feet at least once a day being careful to dry between and under the toes.  Apply Manuka or Tamanu essential oil, or a combination of both, to the affected area.  Cover the area with a clean cotton sock or towel for at least 30 minutes to allow the oil to penetrate.  Change socks as frequently as practical but at least once a day.  Try to wear socks that wick moisture away from the feet.

Locker Rooms and Nail Salons….Protect Your Feet!

Since athlete’s foot and toenail fungus are transmitted through moist mediums such as water in a locker room shower or a public swimming pool, be sure to protect your feet when using these facilities and especially when getting a pedicure.  Check that your nail salon uses sterilized tools on your feet and nails and that it appears clean overall.

Sterilize your own scissors and nail files and wash socks in hot water.  Keep athletic shoes clean and replace the removable insole frequently or wash them according to instructions.  It is also helpful to rub a few drops of Manuka oil in the toe bed of shoes to create a hostile environment for any bacteria or fungus as these enclosed moist areas are the perfect medium for these infections.

While these powerful essential oils are very effective in the treatment of toenail fungus and athlete’s foot, there are stubborn cases that need professional help due to the rarity of the particular fungus or yeast.  If you have done your best using essential oils for toenail fungus, and other home remedies for athletes’ foot, and are not seeing the results you expect, see your podiatrist.

Treatment for Dry Cracked Heels

After a summer of wearing sandals, many people find the skin along the perimeter of the heel dry and cracked. If you work standing or walking the pressure can cause the same effect.

This can be quite painful and if the skin is cracked, it can lead to infection.  In this case, a little foot love using Tamanu oil is particularly helpful.  The acids contained in the oil allow deep penetration into the substructure of the skin.

If you find you have areas of your foot with thick dry cracked skin, try massaging a few drops of Tamanu oil into these areas daily.  This works best if you can soak your feet for 15 to 30 minutes in a warm bath or basin.  Using Epson Salt helps soften the thick patches of skin which then receive the Tamanu oil more readily.

Massaging the upper area of the foot is very beneficial as well.  There are some studies that credit Tamanu oil for relieving joint pain due to the anti-inflammatory properties of this oil.  Additionally, the action of massage will improve circulation to the foot which helps when restoring moisture and suppleness to formerly dry cracked skin.
