How do the competitors to the Apple Pencil (both gen 1 and gen 2, if there are competitors for both?) really compare?

I've usually had a pretty bad time to 3rd party "replacements".

level 2

As an artist, I bought the original Crayon and exchanged it for the Pencil2. No pressure sensitivity for Procreate was a deal breaker. The brushes are extremely reliant on pressure for size and opacity, but if you don't use those features then the Crayon might be fine.

I also like that the Pencil2 attaches via magnet and charges that way, but I can't say I leave it there often.

level 2

In my experience it feels exactly like Pencil 1, just with a pressure sensor disabled.

level 2

Usually no pressure and/or tilt sensitivity. It is up to you how much you value those (e.g. I personally don't think tilt is that important for note-takers, but rather like pressure sensitivity, though it is not a requirement. Both are a must for digital pencil artists, etc.), but it is much better with them than without.

level 2

I have the Zagg stylus. Definitely not cheap, but it's cheaper than any Apple Pencil, works fine, charges with USB-C which are laying around everywhere, and it magnetically attaches to my iPad 9th gen even though that's not "technically" supported.

level 1

I have the previous version and can recommend it as long as you don't need the pressure sensitivity (I don't, I use it for notes and technical sketching, and kids use it to draw). I compared it with a 1st gen Pencil, and sensitivity seems exactly same.

Advantages:

  • works with every iPad (while Pencil does not) = futureproof (I got it for 5th gen Mini, so it's nice to know it will work with its replacement) EDIT: Apparently it doesn't work with first and second Gen iPad Pros, see /u/phatweeb below - iPads 2018 and newer are supported.

  • aluminium body - childproof, I am not afraid of it breaking inside the bag or by children stepping on it, or just tossing it on the shelf

  • connector won't accidentally break during charging

  • cheaper

I ran into a silly issue when handing down an iPad Pro 9.7 to a kid. Apple Pencil works with it, Logitech Crayon does not. Really strange!

level 2

Would this work with 7th gen Ipad?

level 2

Well this kind of obliterates my charitable assumption that there was a technical reason Apple couldn’t/didn’t support both Pencil models on any iPad model. The Crayon does basically the same thing and miraculously overcomes that insurmountable hardware limitation, at a lower cost somehow.

level 1

Gonna eat this one myself! Not gonna leave any for the Marines!

level 1

The Logitech Crayon would be a nice alternative to the Apple Pencil 1 IMO (my only worry is that it is thicker and I may find the lack of pressure sensitivity to be annoying if I ever take up more complex drawing). Anyways, does it have palm rejection?

EDIT: Google tells me that it does have palm rejection. I should have googled first.

level 2

It seems to me that the insides are the same (I wonder if they just use the same Apple's technologies and chip, but Apple outsources the manufacture because it needs something durable for schools in order to sell them iPads, but doesn't want to make its Pencil portfolio even more confusing?)

level 2

Now even basic pens on Amazon have palm rejection. The one I bought for 20€ have it.

1 of the 6 sentences in the article posted says it has palm rejection ya block head!

Hello everyone, hope you all are feeling nice today! . I'm a medical school student and I have my Ipad 8th generation and I'm looking forward to get a stylus for it The apple pencil is all good and I know it, but the thing is its price in my country is just stupid idk why it's too expensive 😅 So I wan wondering if the Logitech Crayon is any good? I need it for note taking and annotating pdf files The price difference is almost 40$ Thanks!

It's a good stylus. If you are just writing notes and doing basic doodles, then it's more than fine. Hell, I'm sure if you're a decent artist, you might even be able to do pretty good drawings with it because it just lacks pressure sensitivity and you can kinda make up for it with tilting the Crayon. That's the only real difference from the Apple Pencil in terms of actually writing and drawing with it.

Also, no pairing needed.

I really appreciate your help ! Thanks

So even though it’s not an Apple Pencil, it writes precisely? Not like those old stylus with the big chunky end?

level 1

I have heard from reviews that it is the best alternative. However the emphasis is on ALTERNATIVE which means that the Apple Pencil is still the best option for a stylus!

level 2

Thanks! I'll see what I can do .

I got mine for (very amateur) art and it works great. I don't use the tilt function and it lacks pressure sensitivity that the pencil has. For simple writing as you plan to do, it won't be an issue whatsoever.

Appreciate your words sir ! Thank you

Grad school student here- absolutely no complaints about my Logitech crayon! The only difference between it and the gen 1 pencil is pressure sensitivity, which I don’t miss as I’m not an artist. It doesn’t indicate battery life but I plug it in for an hour every few days and that’s worked fine. Totally worth the savings.

level 2

Thank you so much ! I shouldn't be missing out on the software side right? Like apps support and such stuff

level 1

Just bought myself the Logitech crayon I think it’s worth it based on the price point and the fact that you are using it just for notes :)

level 2

I ordered one actually! But it is detected the same as the apple pencil right?

What is better than Apple Pencil 2?

What are the best alternatives to an Apple Pencil? The best alternatives we've found are the Logitech Crayon, Zagg Pro Stylus, and the Adonit Note +. Out of the three, the Adonit Note + is the only stylus with pressure sensitivity — though whether it's as sensitive or as accurate as the Apple Pencil is debatable.

Is there anything better than an Apple Pencil?

Adonit Note+ A total game-changer for digital artists, the Note+ from Adonit has a look and feel reminiscent of the Apple Pencil. The stylus is loaded with features that aren't found on many other Pencil alternatives including tilt sensitivity, palm-rejection technology, and 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity.

Is it worth getting 2nd Gen Apple Pencil?

The Apple Pencil 2 is considered an active stylus that has several advantages over the less expensive stylus pens' valued a few bucks more than the apple pencil 1. Apple Pencil 2 is a must have for those looking to create professional level art or are taking notes on the iPad.
