This concert is a tribute to the successful and close collaboration between two legendary artists: the composer Joe Hisaishi and the director Hayao Miyazaki. This magical concert experience will reach Stockholm in June – and Joe Hisaishi himself will participate on stage as both conductor and piano soloist.
Joe Hisaishi and Hayao Miyazaki has created unique cinematography together for over 30 years. Their artistic collaboration has reached world-fame through the film from the Japanese animation production house Studio Ghibli.
My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle… the list of animated masterpieces is long, and the Studio Ghibli films are beloved by audiences all over the world. Joe Hisaishi’s moving and personal music makes a powerful contribution to the character of the movies. Or, in the words of legendary Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki: “Joe Hisaishi is the only match for Miyazaki’s anime.”
The concert will include music from about ten of the most popular Ghibli movies. Under the leadership of Maestro Hisaishi, the music will be performed by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Katarina choirs and a number of vocal soloists, while sequences from the movies are projected onto a screen.
This lavish production has been a hit in Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles and Melbourne, Australia. In Europe, it has been presented in Paris, Lyon, Brussels and Prague. The concerts at Konserthuset Stockholm will thus be the Scandinavian premiere of the Joe Hisaishi Symphonic Concert – a unique opportunity for all Ghibli fans.

The Man Behind The Music Of Studio Ghibli
Mamoru Fujisawa, perhaps best known by the professional alias of Joe Hisaishi, is a master of multiple genres including European classical, Japanese traditional, ambient electronic and minimalist music, yet brings them all together under a truly distinctive signature sound. Since 1984, his unique style has become synonymous with the films of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, having composed the soundtrack for all but one of the revered studio's feature film animations.
One of Japan's most celebrated and prolific composers, the talented muso brings his works for these films to US shores this fall for a series of special concerts, leading a full orchestra and choir through some of his best loved compositions for Princess Mononke, Porco Rosso, My Neighbour Totoro and Academy Award winner Spirited Away amongst others. Video compilations from the films accompany the music during what is sure to be an evening filled with nostalgia, whimsy and exquisite music.
