Record Alert

India equals Australia’s record for most wins across formats in a calendar year

India beats South Africa by 7 wickets

Shubman Gill narrowly missed a well-deserved half-century but he has done the job for India with a brilliant 57-ball. Shreyas Iyer has played his part with a timely knock and ensured India faced no further hiccups in chasing down 100. South Africa collapsed in a heap and there was absolutely no rhythm in their batting. The Indians were clinical with the ball with Kuldeep Yadav eking out a four-wicket haul and the rest of the bowlers complementing the chinaman. India wins the series 2-1 under Shikhar Dhawan’s leadership and it’s a happy unit. Over to the T20 World Cup. Do join us as we will be up early, covering all the matches and getting you all the latest updates. Till then, it’s goodbye from Team Sportstar.

IND 77/2 after 15 overs - Needs 23 runs to win

Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer have taken complete control of the match and the crowd, although willl be happy with a India win would have liked the match to go the distance. Netherthless, India would eventually win, unless a catastrophy strikes and we will now move to the all-important T20 World Cup.

IND 65/2 after 12 Overs - Needs 35 runs to win

Ishan Kishan falls as Bjorn Fortuin strikes but his fall has little impact on the game as Gill is driving India towards the targer. He is joined by Shreyas Iyer, who slammed a brilliant century in the previous match. India on course to win the final ODI and the series.

IND 53/1 after 10 overs - Needs 47 runs to win

Shikhar Dhawan falls as the India skipper was caught short of his crease but India motoring on nicely towards the target. The 50 is up as Ishan Kishan joins Shubman Gill. South Africa needs a miracle to win from here.

IND 35/0 after 5 overs, Need 100 to win

Shubman Gill has taken the attack to the opposition and India up and running in chase of 100. Shubman Gill is batting on 24 with five boundaries to his credit with skipper Dhawan in company. This is India’s game and they are in a hurry to wrap things quickly.

India begins chase of 100

Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill are out in the middle and India start favourites to win the match. Bith batsmen haven’t got the runs they would desire and it’s a wonderful opportunity to seal the series with some runs under the belt. Marco Jansen with the new ball. Here we go!

SA 99 all out, Kuldeep takes four

What an impressive show from the bowlers as India bowls out South Africa for just 99 in 27.1 overs with Kuldeep Yadav starring with a four-wicket haul. Mohammed Siraj, Shahbaz Ahmed and Washington Sundar share six wickets among themselves to give India a genuine chance of winning the series. South Africa never had the momentum with only Henricch Klassen managing a 42-ball 34 as the rest collapsed. Back for the chase in a bit.

SA 94/7 after 25 overs: Shahbaz strikes

South Africa have not even notched three figures and are seven down. Shahbaz Ahmed strikes and it’s just a matter of time that India bowls out the visitors.

SA 73/6 after 20 overs: Kuldeep strikes, South Africa in doldrums

South Africa in all sorts of trouble and they have lost six wickets with just 73 runs on board. Kuldeep Yadav strikes on arrival as he outfoxes Phehlukwayo with a googly and the batsman chops onto his stumps. India, commanding the match.

SA 67/5 after 19 overs: Sundar stikes

Miller falls and with that South Africa are five down within 19 overs. A slider from Washington Sundar, Miller misses it as the ball hits the off-pole. The umpires went upstairs and wanted to be sure that the ball dislodged the bails and there was nothing to save Miller. His stumps were clattered. South Africa in deep trouble.

SA 44/4 after 16 overs: Shahbaz strikes, India on top

Shahbaz Ahmed has produced a beauty and induces an edge as Markram walks off. It’s a spinner’s delight as Murali Karthik points it out in the air as the ball dips and turns away, drawing the batsman forward and the ball just brushing the edge of the bat. Excellent anticipation from Sanju Samson as the wicket-keeper was ready just not for the catch but was also looking for a stumping. India well and truly and top.

SA 35/3 after 13 overs: India on top

Avesh Khan is bowling in a perfect rhythm but he isn’t looking good as the fast bowler is showing signs of discomfort and it won’t be surprising if he goes out of the field. Shahbaz Ahmed is into the attack and India are attacking, eyeing further inroads. It’s been a disciplined bowling for India.

SA 26/3 after 10 overs: Siraj takes two

Mohammed Siraj is breathing fire and he has picked his second wicket by bouncing out Hendricks. The fast bowler has mixed his lengths and has been successful with the short delivery and this time does the trick again as the batsman closes his eyes and swivels a pull to short fine leg where Ravi Bishnoi juggles and takes the catch in the second attempt. India on top.

SA 25/2 after 8 overs: Siraj Strikes

Mohammed Siraj continues his fine form amd he removes Malan, who hits a bumper straight down the throat of Avesh Khan at deep square leg. Malan drove Siraj through the covers for a boundary the previous ball but credit to the bowler for surprising the batsman with a quick short ball and the fielder making no mistake. India in control. The fast bowler is making a case for himself to fill in Jasprit Bumrah’s place in the T20 World Cup. But, Shami is the frontrunner.

SA 19/1 after 6 overs

Reeza Hendricks and Janneman Malan are into the rebuilding work but India attacking with the new ball. It’s not an easy pitch to bat on and there is moisture in the pitch. India will look to use the advantage of winning the toss and picking early wickets.

SA 7/1 after 3 overs - India Strikes

Washington Sundar strikes and he removes the dangerous Quinton de Kock. There is bounce on this wicket and de Kock slices it straight to Avesh Khan at short third man. India begins well and they have the wicket of a destructive opener.

India Unchanged

So Shikhar Dhawan hasn’t tinkered with the Playing XI and this is an important match for both teams. A win will bolster Dhawan’s confidence both as a captain and player, while South eye those crucial points for World Cup qualification.

India bounces back

India did well to level the series after losing the first match in Lucknow, a rain-shortened affair. But scrutiny will be on the openers, after two failures: neither Shikhar Dhawan, who otherwise has a good record in ODIs as captain, nor Shubman Gill have been able to resist the marauding South African fast bowlers for long.

SA eyes rare series win

South Africa will hope to become only the second team to beat India in a bilateral ODI series on Indian soil since October 2015.

Sun shines in Delhi

Good news folks! The sun is out and our correspondent Abhishek Mukherjee informs that it isn’t raining at the moment. We are set for a Delhi Dhamaka as both teams eye to win the decider. South Africa eye a rare series win and for the Shikhar Dhawan-led India, it will be a golden opportunity for the young players to prove their mettle. Stay tuned as we bring you all the latest updates from the national capital.

Rain Threat

The national capital has received a lot of rain in the past four days and even today there has been a spell of rain. There are chances of a delayed start, is what we are getting information from the ground.

Preview

South Africa returns to the Arun Jaitley Stadium for a limited-overs international after just four months. The weather now cannot be more different than in June, during peak summer, when the two teams clashed in the first match of an eventually drawn T20I series.

Soft rain, cloudy sky and cool breeze combine to make it a lovely moment to play cricket. With rain predicted for Tuesday too, the chances of the third and final One-Day International being shortened are likely.

Neither India nor South Africa held any press conferences or trained today.

With just six days to go before the start of the T20 World Cup, neither team has much riding on the series. The third ODI gives members of the South African team, who are part of the T20 World Cup squad, some match practice. Besides, it is a golden opportunity to clinch a rare series win on Indian soil.

The search for relevance notwithstanding, it has so far been an entertaining rubber full of exciting moments and phases of play and individual performances: Kuldeep Yadav’s magnificent delivery to get rid of Aiden Markram in Lucknow, excellent stroke-making from several batters, and fruitful spells of bowling from Kagiso Rabada and Wayne Parnell.

Magnificent Siraj

Mohammed Siraj’s performance in the second ODI in Ranchi has perhaps been the most exciting takeaway for India in this series so far, and another good performance may compel the selectors to fly him to Australia for the T20 World Cup as a replacement for the injured Jasprit Bumrah. He will be licking his lips, too, to bowl in favourable conditions here.
