That's because apart from site- and store-wide credit for almost anything and everything the retailer sells, you can also purchase gift cards redeemable at other retailers such as Airbnb, Disneyland, Starbucks, REI, and far too many more to count.
Whether it's for the holidays, a token of appreciation (for, say, a teacher), or a graduation gift, you can buy themed cards for just about any occasion. With more than 1,800 stores across all 50 states, you can be reasonably sure that a Target store is nearby your recipient, and even if it's not, Target offers a huge selection of goods that can be ordered online.

According to Target, Target gift cards neither expire nor lose value, even if such a statement is printed on a gift card.
What can I buy with a Target gift card?
You can buy most things at Target with a gift card, save for American Express, Visa, or Mastercard gift cards or prepaid cards, specialty gift cards such as those for gaming, music, and restaurants, and other Target gift cards.
Can I return a Target gift card?
No, Target gift cards may not be returned. That said, this is subject to change, and your best protection regarding gift card expiration is the Federal Credit Card Act of 2009, which makes it illegal for gift cards to expire for 5 years (and while Target doesn't currently employ them, inactivity fees are still legal).
Do Target gift cards go on sale?
About once a year, usually around Black Friday and Cyber Monday, we see Target offer discounts on its gift cards. Last year, you could get up to $500 worth of Target gift cards for 10% off (a savings of up to $50) the weekend after Cyber Monday. We wouldn't be surprised to see a similar deal this year.
