How to cast phone screen to roku tv

Once your Android and Roku are on same Wi-Fi network, it's just a couple of taps

What to Know

  • Connect your phone and Roku TV/Roku device to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Open the app you want to cast from on your phone, and select the cast icon if possible.
  • If the app doesn't support casting, you can use Screen Mirror to share your entire phone screen.

This article explains how to cast to Roku TV, whether you're using an app with its own cast function, or need to mirror your phone's screen instead. These steps will work on Roku TVs, or TVs equipped with a built-in Roku.

How Do I Cast My Phone to Roku TV?

Most streaming applications have a built-in cast feature. That includes Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and YouTube, among others. The following steps and screenshots detail the process for the Netflix Android application, but the process is generally the same for other streaming apps (although the interface might be slightly different).

  1. Make sure your Android phone and Roku TV or Roku device are on the same Wi-Fi network.

  2. Open the streaming app you want to cast from on your Android phone.

  3. Select the cast icon in the corner of the screen. It looks like a rounded-corner rectangle with three curved lines in the bottom left-hand corner—like the Wi-Fi symbol.

In our example we're using Netflix, so we've made sure Netflix is installed on both our Android device and the Roku we're streaming to. And we're already signed into our Netflix account on both devices.

  4. When prompted, select your Roku TV or Roku device to begin casting. The streaming service app will then open on your Roku device to the content you wanted to cast. You can then continue to use your Android device as a remote control for choosing and adjusting content on your TV.

Mirroring Your Screen to a Roku TV

If the Android application you're using doesn't support casting, or you simply want to show your phone's screen on your TV, you can mirror your screen instead. This process is called something slightly different. While Screen Mirror is the most common, it's also known as Screen Cast, Quick Connect, Smart View, Screen Casting, Cast, or Wireless Display, among others.

  1. Make sure your Android phone and Roku TV or Roku device are on the same Wi-Fi network.

  2. Pull down the quick settings menu from the top of the screen.

  3. Scroll through the options and select Screen Mirror or the alternative name for it. In these screenshots, it's called Screen Cast.

  4. When prompted, select the Roku TV or Roku device to which you are mirroring.

  5. Wait a moment for it to connect. You should see a loading screen on your Roku TV, before your Android phone's screen is mirrored. Your device's screen will display the message 'Connected' when the connection is complete.

FAQ

  • How do I cast an iPhone to a Roku?

Mirroring an iPhone to Roku is a similar process to doing so for an Android phone. First, make sure mirroring is active on your Roku by going to Settings > System > Screen Mirroring. Then, with your iPhone and Roku on the same network, open Control Center on your iPhone and then tap Screen Mirroring (two rectangles). Your Roku should appear as an option; select it to start mirroring.

  • How do I cast my PC screen to a Roku?

Your Roku should appear as a casting option if you select the Cast menu in a compatible app. Alternatively, in Windows 10, open the Action Center and then go to Connect and select your Roku. In macOS, open the Screen Mirroring window in the toolbar at the top of the screen, and then click your Roku. In either case, your PC/Mac and Roku must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Looking for an easy way to share videos, music, or photos stored on your smartphone or computer to your TV? Do you also own a Roku? If so, you're in luck. The Roku 3 , Roku Streaming Stick , and now the brand new Roku 2 (2015 model) support screen mirroring. This allows Android and Windows users to easily mirror the content that's on their smartphone or PC to their TV. Here's what you need to know to set it up:

On your Roku

You must first enable screen mirroring on your Roku device. This can be done by clicking on Settings in the left navigation bar, followed by Screen Mirroring.

On Android

Before we jump right in, make sure your Android device is running version 4.4.2 or later. You can check this by going to Settings and clicking About. Your device must also be connected to the same network as your Roku. You can check the network your Roku is connected to in the network section of the settings menu.

To begin mirroring on a stock Android device, go to Settings, click Display, followed by Cast Screen. Then tap the Menu button in the top right corner of the screen and check the Enable Wireless Display box. Your Roku should now appear in the Cast Screen section.

If it doesn't show up, back out to the Settings and reopen Cast Screen. Once you see your Roku box or stick appear on the screen, simply tap on it to connect. Now whatever you see on your mobile device is exactly what will be displayed on your TV.

The method is slightly different on devices from Samsung, HTC, LG and other Android manufacturers. For example, on the Galaxy S5 you will find the Screen Mirroring option under the Connect and Share section of the settings menu. On other Android devices you should find a screen mirroring option in the Settings menu or Display subsetting, as long as the device is running Android 4.4.2 or higher.

Some Android apps such as Netflix, HBO Go and YouTube can also be projected to your screen, similar to how the Chromecast works. Simply tap the cast icon in the top right corner of compatible apps and select your Roku box or stick.

On Windows 8.1 devices

Roku's screen sharing feature is also compatible with Windows 8.1 tablets and computers. To set it up, head to Settings, click PC and Devices, followed by Devices, then Add Device. When your Roku appears on the drop-down menu, tap on it to connect.

On Windows Phone

Only select Windows Phone devices, such as the Nokia Lumia 1520 and HTC One M8 Windows Phone edition , support Miracast, the standard Roku uses for screen sharing. On a compatible device, head to Settings, scroll down to Project My Screen and select your Roku device to begin screen sharing.
