Updated on April 25, 2022

Most Fire Stick remotes can control a TV's volume settings, but this feature doesn't always work as smoothly as planned. This guide will walk you through all of the leading causes for such Fire Stick remote problems, in addition to offering several tried and true solutions to get the TV volume working correctly with your Fire Stick remote.

The majority of the advice and fixes on this page apply to all Fire Stick models and remotes. Model-specific tips/solutions will says so when needed.

What Causes Fire Stick Remote Volume Problems?

Issues with volume control can happen with Amazon Fire Stick remotes when the incorrect audio and device settings have been selected, the wrong HDMI port is being used, and when the batteries are out of power or almost empty.

Physical objects placed in front of the TV can also interfere with volume control signals sent from the Fire Stick remote as can conflicts with other wireless devices.

How Do I Get the Volume to Work on My Fire Stick Remote?

There are quite a few different solutions to Fire Stick remote volume problems so it’s best to work through them in order from easiest and quickest to more advanced. Here’s what you can do to fix any TV volume bugs affecting your Fire Stick remote control.

If you can’t find any volume buttons, this means you have an earlier model which doesn’t support volume control. In this case, simply use your TV or speaker remote

  1. Press the Mute button. You or someone else may have accidentally pressed it on the Fire Stick remote or one of your other remotes.

  2. Change the Fire Stick remote batteries. Your Fire Stick remote’s batteries could just be flat or low on power. Try replacing them with newer batteries.

  3. Remove obstacles. It’s possible an object is blocking the IR receiver on your TV. Try moving decorations and plants away from the TV and see if this works.

Obstacles blocking the IR receiver is a common problem around Halloween and Christmas when you may have decorations on your TV.

  4. Restart your Fire Stick. Press Select and Play to restart your Fire Stick streaming stick. This can fix a variety of problems you may be experiencing including volume glitches.

  5. Use the HDMI-CEC port on your TV. Using this HDMI port will allow the Fire Stick to control your TV’s volume.

You may also need to enable support for audio control through the HDMI-CEC port via your TV’s native settings. You should be able to find this from your TV’s Home screen or the Settings and Action Menu options.

  6. Change the Equipment Control settings. Select Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment to enable audio control via the Fire Stick remote for your TV and various speakers. If your speakers aren’t showing, select Add Equipment from the Equipment Control menu.

  7. Use another remote. Your volume controls may actually be set to be managed through your TV or speaker system. Try using these remotes to change the volume while using the Fire Stick.

  8. Turn off Dolby Digital Plus. Dolby Digital Plus is a sound setting that can make some apps sound great but it can also make others quieter than normal. To disable this setting, select Settings > Display and Sounds > Audio > Dolby Digital Output > Dolby Digital Plus Off.

  9. Unpair Bluetooth devices. If your Fire Stick model supports pairing with Bluetooth devices, select Settings > Controllers & Bluetooth Devices > Other Bluetooth Devices and unpair all unneeded devices. Having too many devices connected could be causing conflicts.

  10. Reset your Fire Stick remote. Unplug your Fire Stick, wait 60 seconds, press Left + Menu + Back for 12 seconds, remote the batteries, plug your Fire Stick back in, put the batteries back in, and press Home.

Instead of Left + Menu + Back, the Basic Edition remote uses just Home + Menu while the Alexa Voice Remote (1st Generation) remote uses Home + Left in the above reset process.

  11. Reset your Fire Stick. This should only be used as a last resort as it will remove all of the custom settings and preferences from the Fire Stick in addition to any downloaded content. It could fix your sound and volume problems though.

  12. Use Alexa. If you still can’t get the volume buttons to work, try using the Alexa voice controls if your remote supports it. “Alexa, increase the volume” and “Alexa, decrease the volume” are the phrases you’ll need.

Can You Control TV Volume With Fire Stick Remotes?

You can control the TV volume with most Amazon Fire Stick remotes though this functionality isn’t supported on some older models.

The easiest way to check if your Fire Stick remote supports TV volume control is to look for its volume buttons. If your remote has volume buttons, it can control the volume on a TV. If your Fire Stick remote doesn’t have any volume buttons, then it can’t be used this way.
