  • My color remover got most of the red out but now it’s kinda a dull light brown. I did a strand test with bleach today and it tried to reverse the color remover turning it back red :(( when can I bleach all this out without worrying about it reversing or should I use another color remover.

  • What brand/color of red and which color remover did you use? I ask only because certain (especially bright colored) dyes are direct dyes and certain color removers don't work on direct dyes and only "seem to work" for a bit until the cuticle closes or whatever, most color removers will not work on direct dyes. Have you tried Dawn and vitamin c etc?

    • Fading direct dye week 3

  • You need to rinse out as much of the residual dye molecules as possible. They are still in your hair, but just colourless now. I usually shampoo my hair every day for a week or you could do a thorough 1-2 hour rinse with a lot of agitation and scrubbing your hair. I find that quite harsh which is why I usually just split it up.

You can test if it's safe to bleach again by doing a strand test with just the peroxide (a lower volume if you have it) and see if it turns again.

  • I commend the color remover for removing most of the red.

After any color remover strongly suggest thoroughly rinse the hair at least twice and wash the hair at least twice. Reduced color molecules when re-oxidized by the bleach will bring the color back. So urgent to remove the reduced color molecules from the hair. After rinsing and thoroughly washing the hair as previously suggested, suggest wait several days to a week before bleaching. Waiting will give time for the hair to regain natural oils and moisture that was removed from/washed out of the hair. Natural hair oils protect the hair when bleaching.

Terrific suggestion by my colleague : You can test if it's save to bleach again by doing a strand test with just the peroxide (a lower volume if you have it) and see if it turns again.

These are my suggestions and opinions.

  • It was a permanent hair color so vitamin c wasn’t doing much and the brand of remover was the one in this pic. It’s actually starting to darken again :(

  • My experience with colour remover, used on permanent dark brown coloured hair, was that it re-oxidised and went completely dark brown again within a week of using 2 applications of colour b4 hair colour remover. I wouldn't bother to use it again after my experience, it takes so long to apply it all just for it to re-oxidise a few days later.I left it for another 3 weeks and then went to the salon, my hair took bleach then, but went very warm.

Can You Bleach Your Hair after Stripping It?

Before you make a decision as important as bleaching your hair after using a color remover, you should first get to know what you may end up with.

Hair color removing, in other words, hair dye stripping, is a chemical process that helps to get rid of your current hair color. Hair color removers are sulfur-based products that work on dyed hair no matter how long it has been since you have dyed them. However, it is believed that hair color removers are more effective on newly-dyed hair.

While both stripping and bleaching remove color off the hair and are damaging, there is a difference between the two procedures.

As opposed to bleaching, stripping works only on dyed hair. Applying hair color remover on dyed hair makes it more porous. Due to this, the hair dye washes off more easily.

Bleaching, on the other hand, is used on natural hair too. If you have black or dark brown hair and want to go icy blond, you will need to bleach your hair. This method removes melanin from the hair and that is why it is a permanent option.

As you can see, both procedures are rather damaging to the hair, especially if your hair is fine and fragile. Even if you think you have healthy hair that can withstand the two procedures in a row, do not even try doing it. You may end up with broken and extremely damaged hair with the only solution being cutting a few inches off.

How Long Should You Wait to Bleach Your Hair after Stripping It?

If the situation is so bad that you think you cannot wait a day and want to bleach your hair immediately after stripping it, arm yourself with patience. Bleaching after stripping is the worst thing you can do to your hair.

Both procedures are damaging to the hair and strip the natural oils and moisture off you’re your hair and scalp. While it is understandable that you don’t want to walk around with unwanted hair color, keep in mind that you still want to walk around with hair.

It is recommended by hairstylists and professionals to wait for 7 to 10 days to bleach the hair after you have used a hair color remover.

This time period will allow your hair to ‘rest’ and regain its moisture. However, if you want to better prepare your hair for bleaching and keep it in shape, later on, nourishing and moisturizing treatments should be used.

If you want it to be done professionally, go to a salon and ask for a hair repairing treatment. This kind of treatment rebuilds the broken links in the hair making them much healthier and strong.

However, you can repair your hair at home too. During the period of 7-10 days, it is recommended to use repairing and hydrating treatments 4 to 5 times. There are plenty of hair masks and treatments that will help you regain the health and shine of your hair.

An amazing alternative is high-quality coconut oil that will not only heal the scalp but also strengthen the hair. This will prevent hair breakage after the bleaching procedure.

So, you should wait at least a week before you apply bleach to your hair after stripping it. It is better to wait and take care of the hair rather than hopelessly try to repair it after two damaging procedures.

Can You Bleach Your Hair after Using Colour B4?

Colour B4 is a hair color remover of extra strength. This means that it is quite damaging and may leave your hair somewhat dehydrated.

Like in case of any hair color remover, it is advised to give your hair a little time. You can bleach your hair after using Colour B4 but it is not the best decision you can make. Wait for a few days and let the hair recover its natural oils.

If you do decide to bleach right after stripping, make sure you have washed the stripping product out really well. Washing out hair color remover is key for getting the best result, as the residue of the older dye may get darker again if left in the hair.

Once you are done with washing do a patch test. Apply some bleach to a strand of hair a see how the color changes. If it does not get darker, then you are good to proceed to the bleaching procedure.

With all of this being said, keep in mind that it is not recommended to bleach the hair after using a color remover.

Can You Dye Your Hair after Stripping It?

If you read the description of hair stripping products, they all state that you can re-dye your hair after removing the color. It is stated on some boxes that you can re-color the hair even on the same day after the color-extracting procedure.

However, if you ask professionals, you should not do that and there are a few reasons why.

Firstly, if your previously dyed hair was damaged and porous, re-coloring it after using a hair color remover will only make things worse.

Secondly, because hair color removers make the hair extremely porous, you will not get the desired result after coloring it with a permanent dye. The color will come out much darker than what you expect and want it to be.

This happens because porous hair, when colored, produces a more intense result. It is recommended to use a shade that is 2 or more levels lighter than the end result you are aiming for.

It is better to let the hair rest for a few days or a week and then proceed to dye it.

However, if you do decide to dye right after removing color, go for a temporary hair dye. Alternatively, you can use a semi-permanent hair dye that is closer to your natural hair color.

Waiting for seven or more days will allow your hair to self-repair. The porosity will gradually go away and you will be able to use a permanent hair dye with no problems on your way.

If the only reason you want to color your hair right after stripping is brassiness, then using a purple shampoo will be helpful.

As you have already learned, re-dyeing or bleaching the hair right after using a color removing product is not recommended. However, what is recommended is using a toner after stripping.

Color removers, unlike bleaching products, to not interfere with the melanin of your natural hair. So, they will change your natural hair color. Instead, they will remove the dye by making the hair more porous.

After using a color remover, the color of your hair will have more warmth to it than your natural shade usually does.

Use a hair toner to play down the warmness and get rid of the brassiness.

How Many Times Can You Strip Your Hair?

Hair color remover can be used up to three times in a row. However, it recommended doing two sessions, see what it results in and do the third stripping session if necessary.

If you are someone whose hair has been colored for years, one application of hair color removal may do nothing to the hair. This happens due to the color build-up which is resulted in putting layers of color every few months.

While stripping products can be used three times in a row, it is best to do it twice and wait for a day. If the desired result is achieved, the third session may not even be necessary.

Can You Use Hair Color Remover On Bleached Hair?

Hair color remover lifts the hair dye off your hair and does not interfere with the color of your natural hair. Bleach, on the other hand, goes deep into the hair cortex and dissolves melanin.

The latter is the natural pigment that gives your hair the color it is. Since bleach dissolves all the pigment in the hair there is nothing left for a hair color remover to ‘work on’.

Using a hair color remover over bleached hair will simply not work. The stripping product might even leave your hair orange.

However, if you have bleached your hair and dyed it a certain color, using a color remover afterward will work just as usual. In this case, it will dissolve the hair dye and you will be able to wash it off easily.

Can you put bleach on your hair after using Color Oops?

The bleach wash can work miracles: on me it gets rid of the ugly ashy, yellow, AND orange tones left over from both old dye molecules and the Oops. It also spares you from reactivating the color left in your hair all the time with a developer, and having to use remover over and over and over.

Can I use Color Oops before bleaching?

Conditioning Bleach- Should I use a color remover before the bleach and can I color my hair after wash/dry after bleach? You can, but if you are looking to recolor we recommend using a Color Remover again.

How long should I wait to bleach my hair after using color remover?

Therefore, for best results, we recommend waiting at least 48 hours before re-dyeing. However, if you don't want to wait, choose two shades lighter color than you would like. For example, instead of shade 7.1 (gray blonde), choose shade 9.1 (light blonde gray), etc.

Is Color Oops damaging as bleach?

Does Color Oops damage hair? The truth is, no, it does not damage hair as much as bleach does. But it does use strong chemicals to strip the color from your hair which can leave your hair feeling dry and brittle, and in some cases, it can even cause your hair to break off.
