1 AnswerBased on an Instructables article about rebuilding a Black and Decker battery, it would appear they have chosen to use the outside terminal for positive and the inner terminal for negative. In another part of the article, he shows another brand of battery that has a very similar terminal but the connectors are in a different position. It's easy enough to just move the terminals as needed. Of course, this might not be true for 100% of the B&D line, but it's pretty good evidence. answered Apr 4, 2019 at 21:02

Even though both packs use the same connector, they are not arranged the same way so some adjustments will have to be
made. On the Harbor Freight battery wires there is a right angle bend on the bottom of the connection wire that needs to be removed, if not the positive and negative wires will touch during final assembly. This step you will put the Harbor Freight wires into the B&D Connector. This isn't an exact fit so on the final assembly you will have to be careful when you put the new pack in. The top of the pack will be a very tight fit. Before testing I like to Check Polarity of any battery work, as you can see it was 18.52 volts. The old battery was 11.5, bad. You may also find that when charging the battery it may be a tight fit because of the additional wiring in
the new battery pack. Which is positive and negative on a 18V battery?A: With the battery facing you with the terminals in the front, the positive is on the left and the negative is the one in the middle. The extra terminal on the right serves no purpose with black and decker 18v tools that I know of, but it doesn't hinder operation either.
How can you tell if a lithium battery is positive or negative? The positive terminal of a cylindrical battery is protruding, and the smooth surface is the negative terminal. The aluminum (Al) tab of the pouch battery is the positive electrode, and the nickel (Ni) tab is used as the negative electrode.
Why is my Black and Decker 18V battery not charging? If your battery is not charging and the charger is rapid flashing and the battery is warm, it may be too hot- particularly after heavy or continued use. If so, please allow the battery to cool, then reinsert the battery on charger to try charging again.
