I was trying to change my crank sensor pulled the starter there was only 2 bolts (the video had 3) the sensor was not there. I ran out of light so I was try again tomorrow. It was 13 F outside and laying on the driveway not fun. I have a 2009 charger 5.7. R/T. I was looking and some 5.7 crank sensor are on the passenger side. Help I am still thawing out.

You only need to remove the starter on the 5/7L engine if it has AWD. The 6.1L always requires starter removal.

5.7L Removal
The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor is located at
the right-rear side of the engine cylinder block. It is
positioned and bolted into a machined hole in the
engine block.
1. If equipped with AWD (All Wheel Drive) disconnect
and isolate negative battery cable.

2. Raise vehicle.
3. If equipped with AWD (All Wheel Drive) remove
starter motor.

4. Disconnect CKP electrical connector at sensor.
5. Remove CKP mounting bolt.
6. Carefully twist sensor from cylinder block.
7. Remove sensor from vehicle.
8. Check condition of sensor o-ring.

5.7L Installation
1. Clean out machined hole in engine block.
2. Apply a small amount of engine oil to sensor
o-ring.
3. Install sensor into engine block with a slight
rocking and twisting action.
CAUTION: Before tightening sensor mounting bolt, be sure sensor is completely flush to cylinder
block. If sensor is not flush, damage to sensor
mounting tang may result.
4. Install mounting bolt and tighten to 12 N·m (106
in. lbs.) torque.
5. Connect electrical connector to sensor.
6. Lower vehicle.

My check engine light came on today and I took it to a local auto parts dealer for a scan. They told me it's a bad crankshaft sensor. Does anyone have an idea where it's located and how difficult of a job it is to change ?

Wouldn't this be covered under warranty?

Based on my search, it's on the passenger side of the block, just head of the tranny, behind the starter. It sounds like the starter has to be removed to replace the sensor.

Hopefully, someone with first-hand knowledge will chime in.

Mine, on the 2013 is located just below the Throttle Body on the passenger side of the engine block. You should see a wiring harness connected to it almost identical to the IAT sensor that is on the CAI. Not sure how you get it out.

I was thinking camshaft position sensor. Usually throws a P0344 code. Just in case it is the camshaft and not the crankshaft (P0016) attached is the location of the camshaft sensor.

From another forum: "The crankshaft position sensor (CKP) and Camshaft position sensor (CMP) work in harmony to control the spark/fuel delivery and timing. They both consist of a reluctor, or tone, ring which passes over a magnetic sensor, which generates a voltage, indicating position."

"The crankshaft sensor is part of the primary ignition system and functions as the "trigger". It detects the position of the crankshaft relays that information on to the PCM or the ignition module (depending on the vehicle) to control spark timing. The Camshaft position sensor detects the position of the camshafts and relays the information to the PCM. The PCM uses the CMP signal to identify the beginning of the injector sequence. What ties these two shafts and their sensors together is the timing belt or chain. The cam and crank should be precisely timed together. If the PCM detects that the Crank and Cam signals are out of time by a specific number of degrees, this P0016 (http://www.obd-codes.com/p0016) code will set."

Is it the camshaft position sensor? Or?

Plug a scanner into the car's OBD2 port and see if any codes are logged. Best to use a scanner that can read all codes rather than just Pxxxx powertrain codes. The codes are not always conclusive as to the problem but they are a good starting point.

Where is my crankshaft position sensor located?

The sensor is at either the front or the back of the crankshaft, so it's usually located either on the transmission bellhousing or behind the crankshaft pulley. There should be a small air gap, usually about a millimeter or two, between the sensor and the reluctor.
